Most visitors take one Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul and choose it in a hurry, on a phone or at the pier. The name covers boats that have little in common: a municipal ferry with a booth ticket in lira, an hourly loop run by a co-operative of boat owners, a $9 "mega yacht" that is really a big tour boat with an indoor saloon, a sixteen-seat yacht at sunset, and a dinner ship licensed for 601 passengers with a belly dancer on the stage. This guide sorts them out, with the piers, the turning points and the prices we checked at the booths and on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets.

The Bosphorus (Boğaz in Turkish) is the strait that splits Istanbul between Europe and Asia. It is about 30 km long and narrows to about 700–750 m between Rumeli Hisarı on the European shore and Kandilli on the Asian one. Almost every tour runs the same way: up one shore, across the shipping lanes at the turning point, and back down the other. Big ships keep to fixed lanes, and small boats must cross them by the shortest route, which is why your boat hugs one coast and then darts across.

Which Bosphorus cruise? Eight kinds of boat compared

Type How far it goes How long Leaves from Price per person
Şehir Hatları Short Tour (public) up the strait and back, non-stop after Ortaköy about 2 h Eminönü 14:40 340 TL foreign visitors, 170 TL citizens
Şehir Hatları Long Tour (public) Anadolu Kavağı, at the Black Sea mouth about 6 h, ~2.5 h ashore Eminönü 10:35 640 TL return foreign visitors, 320 TL citizens
Hourly loop (Dentur Avrasya, Turyol) Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge 75–90 min Kabataş, Beşiktaş, Üsküdar; Eminönü 200–300 TL
Platform sightseeing boat about the second bridge 1.5–2 h Eminönü, Kabataş from $6
Shared sunset or day yacht Rumeli Hisarı or the second bridge 2–2.5 h Kabataş, Karaköy about $17–75
Dinner cruise with Turkish night show the lower strait 3–3.5 h Kabataş, Karaköy about $20–45
Private yacht wherever you agree 2 h minimum Bebek, Kuruçeşme, Kabataş, hotel piers about $140–360 per boat
Black Sea lunch cruise Anadolu Kavağı or Poyrazköy 4.5–9 h Kabataş, Taksim pick-up about $135–280

Two things in that table matter more than the price. First, the reach: nearly every 2-hour product turns at or just before the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge (the second bridge, opened in 1988), so it shows you the palaces, Ortaköy Mosque, the first bridge, Bebek and Rumeli Hisarı, and nothing further north. Only the public Long Tour and the lunch cruises go up to the mouth. Second, the boat: a "yacht" on a platform can be anything from a 20-m boat for sixteen guests to a 40-seat tour boat styled as one. Under Turkish rules a commercial yacht carries at most 36 passengers, so a "yacht for 40" is a yacht-style boat.

If you only have time for one trip and want the view without a meal, take an hourly loop or a platform sightseeing boat in daylight. If you have a free morning and a bit of stamina, the public Long Tour shows you the whole strait for 640 TL. Our how to choose a Bosphorus cruise guide walks through the decision by budget, time and who is travelling.

Sightseeing cruise prices: the 200 TL loop or the $9 boat?

Three different things are sold as a "Bosphorus sightseeing cruise", and the cheapest is not online.

Dentur Avrasya's Boğaz Turu is a private ferry company's own tour: a non-stop loop of about 75 minutes up the European shore, turning at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and returning along the Asian shore, with announcements in Turkish and English. It leaves Kabataş at 10:30 and 12:40, then hourly from 13:40 to 19:40; Beşiktaş from 10:40 to 17:55; Üsküdar hourly from 12:30 to 19:30. The fare is 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL on denturavrasya.com, children up to 10 ride free, and the booth takes cards. It is not a hop-on hop-off service: you get off where you got on.

Turyol's hourly tour leaves its own pier at Eminönü, on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge next to the fish-sandwich boats, roughly every hour from about 10:00 into the evening. It takes about 90 minutes to the second bridge and back. Turyol does not publish the price; expect about 300 TL at the booth, ideally in cash. Turyol is a co-operative of boat owners rather than a single company, and its boats also run the city ferry lines.

The Şehir Hatları Short Tour is the municipal option: one sailing a day at 14:40 from Eminönü, with pick-ups at Üsküdar (14:55) and Ortaköy (15:10), then non-stop up the strait and back in about two hours. Foreign visitors pay 340 TL, Turkish citizens 170 TL. Tickets are sold only at the booth. Times are the winter timetable, so check sehirhatlari.istanbul or the Eminönü booth on the day. Our public ferry guide has the full timetable and the commuter-line trick.

Then come the platform boats. The $6 listing on GetYourGuide is a ticket for the same kind of hourly boat that leaves the Turyol pier. Sea & Land's $8 cruise checks you in at an office near Eminönü and walks you to a large shared boat with an indoor saloon and toilets. The most-reviewed sightseeing listing, the Day/Sunset/Night Sightseeing Cruise (4.7 from almost 20,000 reviews, from $9), is sold as a mega yacht; its listing copy points to the Mega Lüfer boats from Kabataş. "Audio guide" on all of these means an app on your phone, so bring your own headphones.

Our view: if you are standing at Kabataş or Eminönü with lira in your pocket, the Dentur or Turyol loop shows you the same shores for less. Book a platform boat when you want a fixed slot, free cancellation up to 24 hours before on most GetYourGuide listings, or a booking you can make from home. The full comparison is on our sightseeing cruise page.

These three listings are similar products, not the same boat, and the times and inclusions differ. The Headout one (Sightseeing Cruise with Optional Audio Guide) cannot be cancelled or rescheduled once booked, so pay for it only when your plans are fixed.

Sunset cruise: choose the month before the boat

A sunset cruise works only if the boat is on the water from the golden hour into the blue hour. Turkey stays on UTC+3 all year, so sunset swings from 17:37 in early December to 20:42 in late June. The ideal boarding time is 75–90 minutes before sunset: about 16:15 in December, 17:00 in mid-October, 17:45 in mid-September or mid-March, 19:00 in May or August and 19:15 in June and July. A fixed "4 PM or 5 PM sunset" slot on the cheap hourly boats only catches the sunset in autumn and winter.

The sun always sets on the European side. Going up the strait, the European shore is on your left; coming back it is on your right. So sit on the left going north and on the right coming back: on the return leg the sunset sits across the whole width of the water with the European skyline in silhouette. The blue hour after sunset lasts only about 30 minutes in Istanbul, and that is when the bridge lights come on.

Shared sunset yachts run from about $17 to $75 per person, most between $20 and $56. Real small groups range from sixteen guests (Stambultour's 20-m yacht from Azapkapı, by the Atatürk Bridge in Karaköy) to 30–40 on the bigger boats. Expect snacks, soft drinks and tea, not a meal. Wine is included only on a few named listings, such as the Sunset Cruise with Snacks and Wine. Golden City Tours' yacht goes up to the second bridge with a live English guide; other boats turn near Rumeli Hisarı. Our sunset cruise guide has the month-by-month departure times and every boat we would book.

Bosphorus dinner cruise: the pier tells you the boat

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is a Turkish night on water: a set menu (a meze plate, salad, one main such as meatballs, chicken, fish or a vegetarian dish, then dessert) and a show that runs from a whirling-dervish stage act through Anatolian folk dances, Caucasian and Black Sea dances to belly dance, a drum segment and a DJ. Boarding is usually between 19:45 and 20:30, sailing 20:00–20:45, back around 23:00–23:30. From October to April the whole evening is after dark; only from May to early August do you leave in daylight or sunset light.

The listings rarely name the boat, but the boarding point gives it away:

  • Kabataş, the petrol-station landing: the Mega Lüfer boats, sold by HGR Cruise Travel Agency, board around 20:00–20:15 and sail at 20:45. Their Dinner Cruise & Show with Private Table had 75,584 reviews when this page was updated, the largest count of any product on the three platforms.
  • Kabataş, Dentur's wooden tour pier: Dentur Avrasya's own Turkish-night cruise boards here, and so do several agencies' dinner listings. Several sellers sell seats on the same few boats.
  • Karaköy: Turyol's Bosfor ship boards from 20:00 and sails at 20:30, back at 23:30. It is licensed for 601 passengers, so expect a cabaret hall rather than a candlelit yacht. Its own site, bosfordinnercruise.com, charges 50 USD, or 80 USD with unlimited local alcohol, with a free transfer, but direct tickets are non-refundable (one date change at least 48 hours ahead). The GetYourGuide listing for the same operator starts lower and follows GetYourGuide's cancellation terms. Orient Bosphorus and Le Vapeur Magique also leave from Karaköy.

Three things the listings gloss over. A shared table is the default; private, close-to-stage and window tables cost more, and a private table needs at least two guests. "Unlimited drinks" means local spirits (rakı, beer, house wine, vodka, gin), never imported brands. And hotel pick-up covers central European-side hotels only, never Kadıköy or Üsküdar. The dinner cruise guide compares the ships and the seat tiers.

The dervish on a dinner boat is entertainment, not the religious sema ceremony. For the real ceremony, Hodjapasha in Sirkeci holds one every day at 19:00 (60 minutes, age 7 and up, no photos).

Private yachts, the Black Sea and the Princes' Islands

Private yachts are priced per boat, not per person, with a 2-hour minimum. On the platforms a 2-hour charter runs from about $140 to $360 per boat; Golden City asks €400 for 2 hours for up to 15 guests. Crew, fuel, tea and coffee are included; food, alcohol, decoration and a guide usually cost extra. For eight to twelve people a private boat costs about the same per head as a premium shared sunset yacht. Ask whether the quote includes VAT and any pier fee, and book at least two days ahead. Details are on our private yacht page.

The Black Sea is a look out of the strait's mouth, not a sea voyage. The public Long Tour leaves Eminönü at 10:35 and reaches Anadolu Kavağı at 12:25, where you have about 2.5 hours for Yoros Castle and a fish lunch before the only boat back at 15:00 (Eminönü 16:40). Private lunch cruises take 4.5–9 hours, some with a swim stop at Poyrazköy in summer. The best-known 5-hour lunch cruise costs the same €150 supplier price on all three platforms, with the most reviews on Headout; Velena's €120 version on Tiqets is cheaper, with very few reviews. Any 2-hour cruise that promises the Black Sea is not telling the truth: Eminönü to Anadolu Kavağı alone takes 1 h 50 on the ferry. See the Black Sea cruise page.

The Princes' Islands are in the Sea of Marmara, not on the Bosphorus. Public ferries cost 151.23 TL with an İstanbulkart (the city's transport card); Turyol's boat from Eminönü costs 230 TL per leg; the fastest route is the 35-minute Mavi Marmara boat from Bostancı on the Asian side. The horse carriages on Büyükada were banned in January 2020, so ignore any tour that still sells them.

Four piers handle almost everything, and each has more than one boarding point.

  • Eminönü (T1 tram Eminönü, Marmaray Sirkeci) has at least three: the Şehir Hatları Bosphorus-tour booth east of the Galata Bridge; Turyol's pier on the Golden Horn side, about 320 m west, for the hourly tour, the islands boat and the cheap platform tickets; and the boats that agencies walk you to from their offices. This is also where touts work.
  • Kabataş (T1 terminus, F1 funicular from Taksim) is a strip: the Şehir Hatları pier, the Dentur terminal about 200 m north, Dentur's separate wooden tour pier, and the private landing by the Kadoil petrol station at Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi 34, printed on some tickets as "Dolmabahçe Mosque". Most Kabataş yachts and the Mega Lüfer dinner boats board there.
  • Karaköy (T1 Karaköy) has Turyol's dinner ship, Orient Bosphorus, Le Vapeur Magique and the Maiden's Tower boats; Stambultour's yacht meets just west at Azapkapı.
  • Beşiktaş, Ortaköy and Üsküdar are pick-up points for the public and Dentur tours. Galataport, next to Karaköy, runs its own 70-minute boat every 30 minutes for 700 TL, with music but no commentary.

Many listings give the exact boarding point only in the final voucher or by WhatsApp, and some trips end at a different pier from where they started. Check the voucher the day before. Our piers guide maps every landing.

GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets: where to book

GetYourGuide is our main partner and has by far the biggest Istanbul cruise range: 157 core cruise listings when we last counted, against 29 on Headout and 22 on Tiqets. Most listings cancel free up to 24 hours before and let you reserve now and pay later. Its big Bosphorus listings are run by local agencies under generic titles, so check the meeting point and the boat in the listing before paying.

Headout is strong on dinner cruises and ticket-plus-cruise combos. Its cancellation policy is set listing by listing: its dinner cruises typically cancel free up to 24 hours before, but its two biggest Istanbul cruise sellers (the yacht sightseeing cruise and the sightseeing cruise with audio guide) cannot be cancelled or rescheduled, and neither can several combos. Read the policy line before you pay.

Tiqets names the legal supplier on every product and publishes reviews from verified buyers only. Its strengths here are the cheaper €120 Black Sea variants and QR tickets for the Eminönü boats, not review volume. It has no Turkish storefront.

The same boat often appears under three logos at one price. The Black Sea lunch cruise is €150 everywhere, and the Golden Horn sunset yacht is €49 on all three, so choose by cancellation terms and reviews. Our platform comparison goes through the terms in detail.

What can go wrong, and how to avoid it

  • Wind. The lodos, a strong south-westerly, blows from October to April and peaks in December. It cancels exposed ferry lines, especially to the islands. On a booked tour the operator or captain decides, and the platform rebooks or refunds under its terms. Don't save the Long Tour for your last day in winter.
  • Fog. When visibility drops below half a nautical mile the strait closes to transit shipping, and city ferry lines are cancelled one by one. Fog is usually a morning event, so evening cruises are rarely hit.
  • Touts. Around Eminönü and the Galata Bridge, people, some in captain's uniforms, sell "Bosphorus tours" on the quay. Buy only at a booth showing the operator's name, or online. The UK Foreign Office advises avoiding $50 and $100 notes because of counterfeits.
  • Crowds. The upper deck fills first, so board early. In summer the afternoon boats fill up after 15:00.
  • Extras. Alcohol (unless your package includes it), tips, photos and extra food cost more. Bringing your own alcohol is banned on shared boats. Carry some lira in cash for drinks and tips.
  • Cold. Operators themselves warn about wind on deck, even on summer evenings. Bring a layer.
  • Access. Most shared boats are not wheelchair-accessible; a few listings say so explicitly, so check before booking.

On safety: there has been no major tour-boat disaster on the Bosphorus in recent years. The incidents on record are two small tour-boat fires and a charter yacht that sank at Bebek pier, all without injuries, and a collision between a Beşiktaş–Üsküdar passenger boat and a cargo ship off Salacak in September 2025 that injured several people. Boats carry life jackets; ask about the safety briefing.

Questions about Bosphorus cruises

How much does a Bosphorus cruise cost?

A public-style loop costs 200–300 TL (Dentur Avrasya 200 TL online, Turyol about 300 TL), and the Şehir Hatları tours cost 340 TL (short) and 640 TL (long) for foreign visitors. Platform sightseeing boats start at about $6, shared sunset yachts at about $17, dinner cruises at $20–45, and private yachts at about $140–360 per boat for two hours.

How long is a Bosphorus cruise?

Most sightseeing and sunset cruises take 1.5–2.5 hours and turn at or before the second bridge; the Dentur loop is about 75 minutes. Dinner cruises take 3–3.5 hours. The public Long Tour takes about six hours including 2.5 hours ashore at Anadolu Kavağı.

Which side of the boat should I sit on?

Sit on the left going north and on the right coming back. The European palaces are on the left on the way up, and the sunset is on your right on the way back.

Can I use İstanbulkart on a Bosphorus cruise?

Not on the tours. İstanbulkart works on the regular commuter ferries, such as Kabataş–Üsküdar for 51.81 TL. Tour booths sell their own tickets; Dentur takes cards, and elsewhere you should carry cash.

Does a Bosphorus cruise go to the Black Sea?

Only the long ones. The Şehir Hatları Long Tour and the 4.5–9-hour lunch cruises turn at Anadolu Kavağı or Poyrazköy, where you look out of the mouth of the strait. No 2-hour cruise reaches it.

Do I need to book a Bosphorus cruise in advance?

Not for a daytime loop: the Dentur and Turyol boats run roughly hourly. Book ahead for dinner cruises, sunset yachts in summer, private yachts (at least two days) and New Year's Eve, which you should book early.
