Dolmabahçe Palace and Bosphorus cruise: combo tickets or do it yourself

Dolmabahçe sits on the water, so a palace morning and a Bosphorus cruise from Kabataş fit into one easy day. Avoid Mondays, when the palace is closed, and know that a combo only saves you the ticket-desk queue, not security.

A Dolmabahçe Palace and Bosphorus cruise day is about the easiest pairing in Istanbul: the palace sits on the European shore of the strait, its visitor gate is a ten-minute walk from Kabataş pier, and every sightseeing boat sails past its waterfront façade. You can buy the two halves as one combo ticket on a booking platform, or buy the palace ticket and the boat ticket separately. Both work. What matters more is the day of the week, the time you start, and knowing what "skip-the-line" really skips.

The short answer: combo or separate tickets?

The palace ticket is the same official ticket either way. The National Palaces administration (Milli Saraylar) sells one foreign-visitor ticket for 2,000 TL that covers the Selamlık (the state rooms), the Harem and the Painting Museum, and it stays valid for seven days. A platform combo adds a boat ticket and an audio-guide pickup arranged for you, but you still pass the security check and collect an audio-guide device like everyone else. The palace's own rules say a reservation gives no priority at the ticket desk, so a combo saves you the desk queue and nothing more.

Book the combo if you like having everything on one voucher and want free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Go separately if you want to choose your own boat, sail at your own time, or pay in lira at the booth.

My pick for most visitors: the Headout Dolmabahçe + Harem + cruise combo. It is rated 4.6 from 146 reviews, can be cancelled up to 24 hours before, and its boat leaves from Kabataş, a short walk away. If you are happy with a QR code on your phone, the official e-ticket plus a Dentur ticket bought at the pier does the same job for less.

Dolmabahçe ticket price and what it covers

The current tariff is simple, and a lot of older guides get it wrong. There is no separate Selamlık ticket and no separate Harem ticket any more. One ticket does it all:

  • 2,000 TL for foreign visitors: Selamlık + Harem + Painting Museum, valid one week (each section once). That means you can do the Selamlık before a midday cruise and come back for the Harem another day.
  • Children 0–6 go free. Foreign students pay twice the 150 TL discount fare and must show an ISIC card.
  • Museum Pass İstanbul is not valid at Dolmabahçe. The pass covers Topkapı, Galata Tower, the Maiden's Tower and Rumeli Hisarı, but none of the palaces on the Bosphorus shore.
  • Combined ticket II (2,750 TL) adds Yıldız Palace and the European-side pavilions. Bought separately, Dolmabahçe plus Yıldız (900 TL) would be 2,900 TL. Yıldız is closed on Wednesdays and on every public holiday, so plan around that.
  • Combined ticket I (3,500 TL) covers Dolmabahçe and all the pavilions on both shores, including Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu, valid one month (not Topkapı).

Desks take Turkish lira in cash or by card. The official e-ticket is sold at millisaraylar.gov.tr: a single-use QR code sent by text message or e-mail, valid for 90 days. Palace tickets cannot be changed or refunded, and there is no refund if some rooms are closed for restoration on the day.

Opening hours and the Monday trap

Ticket offices open 09:00–17:00, and the last ticket is sold at 17:00. Allow about 1.5–2 hours for the Selamlık, the Harem and the Painting Museum; the route is one-way and paced.

Dolmabahçe also closes on New Year's Day and on the first day of both Ramazan Bayramı and Kurban Bayramı. It is open on Republic Day (29 October) and on the other holidays. Check the official Dolmabahçe page before a holiday visit.

From the palace to the boat: Kabataş or Beşiktaş pier

The visitor entrance is the Clock Tower (Saat Kulesi) gate on Dolmabahçe Caddesi, not the grand sea gates you see from the water. Two piers sit on either side of it:

  • Kabataş, about 0.8 km south (around 10 minutes on foot), is the end of the T1 tram and the F1 funicular from Taksim. The Dentur Avrasya terminal and its separate wooden tour pier are here, plus the private landing by the Kadoil petrol station at Meclis-i Mebusan Cd. 34, which tickets call "Dolmabahçe Mosque". See the Kabataş pier guide for the layout.
  • Beşiktaş, about 0.7 km north, has five operators' piers within about 200 m, including Dentur's own Bosphorus tour pier. There is no rail station; the Beşiktaş pier guide explains the walk.

Palace gate to the Kabataş tour boat

  1. Leave by the Clock Tower gate and walk along Dolmabahçe Caddesi towards Kabataş, about 0.8 km.
  2. Aim for the Kabataş tram terminus; the piers line the waterfront along Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi.
  3. For the Dentur Bosphorus tour, look for the Dentur Avrasya terminal, about 200 m north of the Şehir Hatları ferry pier.
  4. For a yacht or a "Dolmabahçe Mosque" meeting point, go to the landing by the Kadoil petrol station, opposite the tram stop.
  5. Be at the pier 15–20 minutes before the sailing; the upper deck fills first.

Headout: Dolmabahçe + Harem skip-the-line + Bosphorus cruise (book here). You meet at the Clock Tower after the security check, show an ID or passport to collect the audio-guide device (without one, Headout asks for a refundable €200 deposit), and visit the Selamlık, gardens and Harem. The cruise is a separate 90-minute ticket from Kabataş, hourly from 12:45 to 15:45, up the European shore and back along the Asian shore. The boat at that pier is Dentur Avrasya's tour boat, the same loop sold at its booth (about 75–90 minutes). Transfer from palace to pier is a 5-minute walk you make yourself; food and drink are not included. Free cancellation up to 24 hours. Its FAQ still says interior photos are banned; that rule has gone.

GetYourGuide: Dolmabahçe Palace ticket & Bosphorus boat tour (see the listing). A "Show&Go" e-ticket for the palace and Harem with a 25-language audio guide, then a boat tour. The listing does not name the boat or the pier, and it is rated 3.8 from 27 reviews. Read the meeting point and the boat details before paying. A newer GetYourGuide listing, Dolmabahçe entry & Bosphorus cruise, has no reviews yet.

Headout: Dolmabahçe + Harem + dinner cruise with Turkish show (listing). Palace in the day, a 3-hour dinner cruise at night with a four-course dinner at a reserved table, folk dances, whirling dervish and sword acts, a DJ, two local alcoholic drinks and unlimited soft drinks. It cannot be cancelled once booked. The listing does not name the dinner boat or pier, and its large review count appears to come from the dinner cruise it is built on. If you want the evening, our dinner cruise guide helps you pick the boat yourself.

On price, GetYourGuide and Headout are within a few dollars of each other for palace + boat. Headout wins on reviews and names the pier. Both are fine; neither gets you in faster than an official e-ticket.

Guided palace tours with a yacht or a sunset cruise

If you want a person, not a headset, to explain the rooms, look at the guided products. Visits inside are self-guided with the free audio guide or led by a licensed guide; there is no compulsory guided tour any more. Groups over eight must use headsets.

Small review counts on the guided tours are normal for this niche; the full-day tour is the safer bet if reviews matter to you. More cruise-plus-sightseeing days are in our tours guide and the full-day tours page.

Rules inside: photos, bags, strollers, audio guide

The palace rules were updated recently, and several old warnings no longer apply:

Pros

  • Phone photos without flash are allowed in the open rooms
  • The audio guide is free with any paid ticket
  • One ticket covers Selamlık, Harem and Painting Museum
  • Your own licensed guide may lead you

Cons

  • No cameras other than phones, no "vlog" rigs, no tripods
  • No strollers inside; large backpacks, suitcases and umbrellas go to the cloakroom
  • No food or drink inside
  • Costumes and wedding or evening outfits are banned, with no photos in them in the gardens either

Bring an ID or passport if you are collecting an audio guide on a platform ticket. Leave the drone at the hotel: drones are forbidden on Bosphorus boats too.

Seeing Dolmabahçe from the water: which side and what light

From the street, the palace hides behind high walls. The long waterfront façade and the ornate sea gates are best seen from a boat, and every Bosphorus sightseeing cruise passes them within the first minutes after Kabataş or Eminönü. It is on the European shore, so sit on the left side going north. On the way back the boat usually comes down the Asian shore, past Beylerbeyi Palace, the other big Balyan-era palace, on your left.

Light matters for photos. Morning sun lights up the European palaces (Dolmabahçe, Çırağan); afternoon sun lights the Asian ones (Beylerbeyi, Küçüksu). So a morning boat and an afternoon palace visit gives you the best façade shots, while the classic palace-first day gives you a sunlit Asian shore. The landmarks guide lists everything you pass, in order, and the sightseeing cruise guide compares the boats.

The cheapest way onto the water from here is the Dentur loop: from Kabataş at 10:30, 12:40, then hourly 13:40–19:40, and from Beşiktaş at 10:40, 12:55, then hourly to 17:55. Children up to 10 ride free and cards are accepted. Times and prices are on denturavrasya.com. Strong wind can cancel sailings; the operator decides on the day. Our public ferry guide covers the municipal Şehir Hatları tours as well.

A little history for the boat ride: the palace was built for Sultan Abdülmecid by the Balyan family of architects and lived in from 1856 by six sultans and the last caliph. Atatürk stayed there from 1927 and died there on 10 November 1938. It has 285 rooms, 44 halls and 6 hammams, and became a palace-museum in 1984.

FAQ

How much is the Dolmabahçe Palace ticket?

2,000 TL for foreign visitors. It covers the Selamlık, the Harem and the Painting Museum and is valid for seven days (each section once). Children up to 6 go free.

Do I need a separate ticket for the Dolmabahçe Harem?

No. The Harem is included in the single 2,000 TL ticket. Older guides that list separate Selamlık and Harem prices are out of date.

Is Dolmabahçe Palace open on Monday?

No, it is closed every Monday, except on 10 November. Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu are closed on Mondays too, so do not book a palace + cruise combo for a Monday.

How far is Dolmabahçe Palace from the Bosphorus cruise pier?

About 10 minutes on foot from Kabataş and slightly less from Beşiktaş. The entrance is the Clock Tower gate on Dolmabahçe Caddesi.

Is Dolmabahçe included in the Museum Pass Istanbul?

No. The Museum Pass does not cover Dolmabahçe or the other palaces on the Bosphorus shore. Buy the palace ticket separately or as part of a combo.

Can you take photos inside Dolmabahçe Palace?

Yes, with a mobile phone and without flash. Cameras, vlog rigs and tripods are not allowed.

Is the skip-the-line combo worth it?

Only for convenience. It skips the ticket desk, not the security check. The official e-ticket QR code does the same, and the Dentur boat can be bought at the pier for 250 TL (200 TL online).
