Anadolu Kavağı is a small fishing village on the Asian shore of the Bosphorus, facing Rumeli Kavağı across the water, at the point where the strait opens into the Black Sea. It is the turnaround of the public Long Bosphorus Tour, which gives you about two and a half hours ashore: enough to climb to Yoros Castle, look out at the Black Sea and the third bridge, and eat fish by the pier.
It is often sold together with Rumeli Feneri and Yoros Castle as one "northern Bosphorus" trip. It is not one trip. Anadolu Kavağı, Yoros Castle and Poyrazköy are on the Asian side; Rumeli Feneri, Garipçe and Kilyos are on the European side, and no tour boat stops at Rumeli Feneri. Pick a shore, or plan a long day with a car.
| Place | Shore | How to get there | What is there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anadolu Kavağı | Asian | Long Tour ferry; commuter boats; bus from Üsküdar | Pier, fish restaurants, path to Yoros Castle |
| Yoros Castle | Asian | On foot from Anadolu Kavağı | Byzantine and Genoese ruin, view of the Black Sea |
| Poyrazköy | Asian | Lunch cruises (swim stop offshore) | Village by the third bridge |
| Rumeli Kavağı | European | Long Tour stop; bus 25A from Hacıosman | Pier facing Anadolu Kavağı |
| Garipçe | European | Bus 150 or 40 | Village under the European tower of the third bridge |
| Rumeli Feneri | European | M2 to Hacıosman, then bus 150 | Fishing village, lighthouse, fort ruin, seafood restaurants |
| Kilyos | European, Black Sea coast | Bus 151 from Hacıosman | Beaches and beach clubs |
Anadolu Kavağı itself is tiny: about 1,500 residents, many of them military personnel from the nearby bases. In antiquity the place was called Hieron. Today the waterfront is lined with fish restaurants that live from the Long Tour passengers.
The easy way is the Şehir Hatları Long Tour (Uzun Boğaz Turu) from Eminönü. Şehir Hatları is the municipal ferry company; the tour runs daily, calls on both shores, and waits at Anadolu Kavağı before taking you back.

Yoros Castle (Yoros Kalesi, also called the Genoese Castle) stands on a steep hill just north of the village, above the junction of the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. It has Byzantine origins; a chain could be stretched across the strait from here. The Ottomans took it in 1305 and lost it, held it again from 1391, the Genoese had it for about 40 years from 1414, and Mehmed II refortified it after 1453. It was excavated in the 2010s.

Lunch first or castle first?
Climb first. The restaurants are by the pier where the boat leaves, so you can stretch lunch until the last minute without risking the 15:00 sailing.
Rumeli Feneri is a fishing village at the north-west end of the strait, about 10 km from Sarıyer centre, with seafood restaurants for day-trippers. Its lighthouse has been known since at least the 15th century, and the fort beside it, built in 1768–69, is now a ruin. No boat in the platform listings stops here: you go by road.
Black Sea beaches are not the Mediterranean
Rip currents cause about 70 % of drownings on Istanbul's Black Sea coast. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty. When the poyraz (north-east wind) raises waves, district governors ban swimming day by day, as Beykoz did on 15–16 August 2026. Check the local notices the morning you go. More in the Black Sea swimming guide.
Can you combine both shores in a day? A commuter ferry crosses between Rumeli Kavağı and Anadolu Kavağı, but sailings are few; check the timetable before relying on it. Otherwise it means a long detour by road via the bridges.

Our view: for Anadolu Kavağı and Yoros Castle, the public Long Tour is better than any lunch cruise. It gives you two and a half hours ashore, which the private cruises do not promise. Book a lunch cruise if you want the swim at Poyrazköy or prefer free cancellation online. For other day trips by water, see day trips from Istanbul.
For the villages and palaces you pass on the way up, see landmarks seen from the water.

Take the Şehir Hatları Long Bosphorus Tour from Eminönü (10:35 on the winter timetable, 640 TL return for foreign visitors). It arrives at 12:25 and leaves again at 15:00. Commuter boats and a bus from Üsküdar also go there, but less conveniently.
No ticket office or fee is published. It is an open ruin reached by a steep lane from the village; the surroundings are a military zone, so stay on the path.
The Long Tour's 2.5 hours ashore are enough for the walk up to Yoros Castle, the view of the Black Sea and the third bridge, and a fish lunch by the pier.
Take the M2 metro to Hacıosman, then İETT bus 150 to Rumeli Feneri, about 52 minutes. It is on the European side; no cruise stops there.
Yes, from the Yoros Castle hill above the village, which looks over the mouth of the strait and the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge.
The tour has no later boat. You will need a commuter ferry to Sarıyer, Rumeli Kavağı or Üsküdar, which run only a few times a day, or the bus to Üsküdar.
