A proposal on a Bosphorus yacht is a well-worn Istanbul set piece, and agencies have turned it into a routine: a private boat, the lit bridges, a stop near the Maiden's Tower and, if you pay for it, your names in light on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge. Done right, it is a private two hours on the water with the city at its best. Done carelessly, it is an expensive boat ride with a surprise bill at the end.

How a Bosphorus yacht proposal usually works

The package Istanbul agencies sell has three fixed elements:

• Boarding at Bebek, the bay north of the first bridge where many private charters board. You start in the prettiest stretch of the strait instead of spending 20 minutes getting there.
• A pause near the Maiden's Tower, the small tower on its islet off Üsküdar, with the Old City skyline behind it. This is where most proposals happen.
• A laser projection of your names onto the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the first Bosphorus bridge. When a listing promises your proposal "reflected on the bridge", this is what it means: a projector set up on the night by the organiser.

The boat runs about 2 hours. Add-ons are sold separately: flowers and decoration, champagne, a violinist, a photographer, banners, dinner on board. Lotus Yat, one of the charter agencies, lists all of these as paid extras without published prices, so ask for a quote for each.

Operators usually take a deposit when you book and collect the balance on board. A Turkish press report described exactly this set-up (Bebek boarding, a stop near the Maiden's Tower, names projected onto the bridge, half paid in advance) and an alleged dispute over the unpaid balance (DHA report). The lesson works both ways: agree the full price, in writing, before you pay anything.

What a proposal costs: package or do it yourself

There are two ways to buy it. A ready-made package on a platform, or a private charter that you dress up with extras.

The $1,122 package is the only one built for a proposal, and it has no track record yet. For most couples, a well-reviewed private yacht plus two or three extras you order yourself (flowers, a bottle, a photographer) costs less and gives you more control. The Headout listing is a good middle way: dinner, drinks and hotel transfers are already in the price.

Ask every operator three questions before paying: Is VAT included? Is there a fee for boarding at a public pier (some agencies add about €45)? And what exactly happens, and when, at the Maiden's Tower?

Timing the moment: sunset, light and where the boat should be

The sun sets on the European side of the strait. For the classic Maiden's Tower shot, that matters: in December the sun goes down right behind the Topkapı and Hagia Sophia skyline as seen from the Maiden's Tower waters; in mid-October behind Süleymaniye; in June and July far to the north-west, over Beyoğlu.

Sunset in Istanbul runs from about 17:37 in early December to 20:40 at the end of June, and Turkey does not change its clocks. Blue hour lasts only about half an hour after sunset, and that is when the bridge lights come on. In winter, think about the deck. Evenings on the open water are cold, and the lodos, the strong south-westerly wind of the colder months, can make the strait rough or cancel the trip altogether. On a charter the captain decides. Have a back-up evening in mind, and ask before booking whether a weather cancellation means a new date or a refund. Do not assume wine on other sunset yachts: on most of them alcohol is sold at the bar or not at all, and snacks mean baklava, fruit and cookies, not dinner.

A dinner cruise with a romantic or window table

If you want dinner, a show and dancing rather than quiet, the big dinner ships sell romantic seating as an upgrade. The tiers run from the shared table (the default) to a private table, a seat near the stage, a window table and finally the "romantic" or birthday table. Examples: Turyol's Bosfor ship adds a private table upstairs for 10 USD more; Been Travel's dinner boats charge €75 for a romantic table with transfer; GYG 1376318 is the cheapest listing with a private window table.

Two things to know. On some boats, window tables are for bookings of exactly two guests, which suits couples. And these are big ships with hundreds of passengers and a loud floor show: romantic in the festive sense, not the private one. The dinner cruise guide and the private-table guide explain the tiers.

Anniversaries, birthdays, Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve

• Birthdays and anniversaries: private yachts are rented for exactly this; Golden City lists its yacht for birthdays and dinner parties, and Been Travel sells a €120 birthday table on its dinner boats. Cakes and decoration are extras to order in advance.
• Valentine's Day: there is no special Valentine's cruise listing on the platforms. Dentur Avrasya has run a "buy one, get one free" offer on its public Bosphorus tour for 14 February (Dentur notice); private yachts book up like any winter weekend.

Free and cheap romance: Salacak and the Maiden's Tower

You do not need a boat for the best-known romantic view in Istanbul. On the Salacak shore in Üsküdar, locals sit on the steps with tea at sunset, facing the Maiden's Tower and the Old City skyline. It costs nothing. Get there by ferry from Eminönü, Karaköy or Beşiktaş; the Üsküdar pier guide has the details.

You can also visit the Maiden's Tower itself by day: boats leave from Salacak about every half hour and from Karaköy six times a day, for 110 TL plus €27 entry, with the tower open 09:00–18:00 (official site).
