How to choose a Bosphorus cruise: ferry, yacht or dinner

Decide three things before you look at a single listing: how far up the strait you want to go, what time of day, and whether you want a meal. The right boat follows from those answers.

Choosing a Bosphorus cruise is mostly a matter of matching the boat to what you want from the afternoon or evening. A 75-minute public-style loop and a $56 "luxury yacht" cover nearly the same stretch of water; a dinner cruise covers less of it than either; and only one boat, the municipal Long Tour, sails the whole strait, for 640 TL. This page works through the decision by goal, time of day, budget and who is coming, and ends with the departures board so you can compare the boats side by side.

Start with the question: what do you want from the boat?

Most bad Bosphorus bookings come from buying the wrong kind of trip, not a bad operator. Match your goal first:

  • "I just want to see the Bosphorus." Take the Dentur Avrasya loop from Kabataş, Beşiktaş or Üsküdar (about 75 minutes, 250 TL at the booth, 200 TL online at denturavrasya.com) or Turyol's hourly boat from Eminönü (about 90 minutes, about 300 TL). Both go to the second bridge and back. A platform sightseeing boat from about $6 does the same with an app audio guide and a booking you can cancel.
  • "I want to see the whole strait, up to the Black Sea." The Şehir Hatları Long Tour: 10:35 from Eminönü, 640 TL return for foreign visitors, about six hours with 2.5 hours ashore at Anadolu Kavağı. No 2-hour product comes close.
  • "I want the sunset." A shared sunset yacht, from about $17. Choose the departure time by the month, not the other way round.
  • "I want an evening out." A dinner cruise with a Turkish night show, about $20–45, roughly 20:00–23:30. You see less of the strait but get a meal and a show.
  • "I want the lights without a show." A night cruise without dinner, such as the Bosphorus Cruise By Night at about $11.
  • "We are a group or celebrating." A private yacht, priced per boat, 2 hours minimum.
  • "I want to set foot in Asia." A yacht with a 30-minute stop at Kanlıca, or simply a commuter ferry to Üsküdar or Kadıköy.

If you are torn between two of these, the reach and the time of day usually settle it. The sections below explain why.

Routes drawn schematically: every boat sails its own licensed loop and turns earlier in strong wind. · Chart: © OpenStreetMap contributors

The standard loop runs up the European shore past Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan (now a hotel), Ortaköy Mosque under the first bridge (15 July Martyrs Bridge), Arnavutköy, Bebek and the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı, then turns at or just before the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the second bridge. Coming back along the Asian shore you pass Anadolu Hisarı, Küçüksu Pavilion, Kandilli, the Kuleli military school, Beylerbeyi Palace and, at the end, the Maiden's Tower off Üsküdar. That stretch holds most of the famous views, and it is what 1.5–2.5-hour products deliver.

Some boats turn earlier. Some sunset yachts turn near Rumeli Hisarı without passing under the second bridge, and dinner boats cruise the lower strait between the Old City and the bridges while the show runs. If the second bridge matters to you, look for it by name in the itinerary.

Only the long trips see the upper strait: Emirgan, Kanlıca's waterside mansions (the oldest surviving one dates from 1699), Yeniköy, Sarıyer, Anadolu Kavağı with Yoros Castle, and the third bridge near the Black Sea mouth. That means the public Long Tour or a 4.5–9-hour lunch cruise. Our landmarks guide tags every sight as "standard loop" or "long tour only".

Public ferry or tour boat?

The public options cost less and run on fixed timetables; the platform tours cost more and sell convenience. Here is the trade-off for a first Bosphorus tour.

These three are comparable 2-hour sightseeing boats, not one boat on three sites, and times and extras differ. The Headout listing cannot be cancelled or rescheduled.

Note that İstanbulkart, the city transport card, does not pay for any Bosphorus tour. It does work on the commuter ferries, which make a decent do-it-yourself cruise: Kabataş to Üsküdar costs 51.81 TL with the card. Check timetables on sehirhatlari.istanbul or at the booth on the day.

Time of day: morning, afternoon, sunset or night

The light changes what you see more than the boat does.

  • Morning light falls on the European palaces, Dolmabahçe and Çırağan. In winter the sun rises after 08:00, so a 09:00 cruise sails in low early light. Breakfast cruises exist; see the morning cruise page.
  • Afternoon light falls on the Asian shore, Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu. This is also when boats are busiest: in summer the afternoon departures fill up after 15:00, and the upper deck fills first.
  • Sunset needs a boat on the water from the golden hour into the blue hour, so book a departure 75–90 minutes before sunset. Sunset moves from 17:37 in early December to 20:42 in late June. Sit on the left going north and on the right coming back, because the sun always sets over the European side. The sunset guide lists the departure times month by month.
  • Night cruises show the lit bridges. From October to March a 19:00 cruise is in full darkness. The cheapest way to see the lights is a no-dinner night cruise at about $11; the municipal Moonlight (Mehtap) tour runs only on Saturdays in summer and returns to Eminönü after midnight. More on the night cruise page.

Istanbul time (UTC+3 all year). Sunset cruises usually leave 60–90 minutes before sunset so the sun goes down mid-cruise; dinner cruises leave after dark.

A dinner cruise leaving at 20:00–20:45 sails entirely after dark from mid-August to early May. If you want daylight and dinner on the same boat, you need to come between May and early August, or book a sunset trip before dinner on land.

Yacht or big boat: how to read a listing

Platform titles use "yacht", "mega yacht" and "luxury" loosely. The listing usually tells you what you are getting if you read it in this order.

How to read a Bosphorus cruise listing

  1. Find the boarding point. The landing by the Kadoil petrol station at Kabataş (Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi 34, printed as "Dolmabahçe Mosque" on some tickets) serves most yachts and the Mega Lüfer dinner boats. Turyol's pier at Eminönü serves the cheap hourly boats. Karaköy serves Turyol's dinner ship and Orient Bosphorus.
  2. Check the group size. Real small yachts take 16 to 30 guests. A commercial yacht may carry at most 36 passengers, so a "yacht for 40" is a tour boat styled as one, and $6–13 "mega yachts" are big boats with indoor saloons.
  3. Check the guide. "Audio guide" means an app on your phone and your own headphones; a live guide costs more and is named as such.
  4. Find the turning point. Rumeli Hisarı or the second bridge is normal. Anything promising the Black Sea in two hours is false.
  5. Read what is included. Sunset yachts serve snacks and soft drinks, not a meal; wine is included only on a few named listings; "unlimited drinks" on dinner boats means local spirits only.
  6. Read the cancellation line. Most GetYourGuide listings cancel free up to 24 hours before; Headout and Tiqets set it per listing, and some never refund.
  7. Check where it ends. Some trips are one-way: one Golden Horn sunset yacht starts at Kabataş and ends at Karaköy.

Once you know the boarding point you know which landing to look for; our Kabataş pier guide shows the strip of landings there, which is where most mix-ups happen.

Dinner cruise: which tier to pick

Every dinner boat sells the same ladder of seats: a shared table, then a private table, then close to the stage or VIP, then window and "romantic" tables. Drinks come in three tiers: unlimited soft drinks, a ticket with two local drinks, or unlimited local alcohol (rakı, beer, house wine, vodka, gin, never imported brands).

How much the alcohol step costs on operators' own sites: Turyol 50 → 80 USD, Velena €40 → €75, Orient Bosphorus €50 → €70. If you will have one glass of wine with dinner, the soft-drinks tier plus a drink bought on board is usually enough; if you plan to drink through a three-hour show, the package makes sense.

Seat rules to know before paying:

  • A private table needs at least two guests. A solo booker on a "private table" ticket sits with others.
  • Some boats reserve window tables for bookings of exactly two; larger groups get shared tables for four or six.
  • Turyol's private table upstairs costs 10 USD more on its own site, but direct Turyol tickets are non-refundable. Platform listings follow the platform's terms.

The ship matters more than the menu. Turyol's Bosfor from Karaköy is licensed for 601 passengers; the Mega Lüfer boats leave the Kabataş petrol-station landing at 20:45; and several agencies' listings board at Dentur's wooden tour pier in Kabataş. Our dinner cruise guide compares them, and the private-table page covers the seat upgrades.

With kids, in a group, or with limited mobility

Children. On Şehir Hatları tours, children under 7 ride free and under-12s pay a child fare (160 TL for the Long Tour, 85 TL for the Short Tour). Dentur's loop is free for children up to 10. On Turyol's dinner ship, under-3s are free and ages 3–7 pay half. Orient Bosphorus runs a family dinner cruise without alcohol. With small children, keep in mind that a June or July sunset cruise ends after 21:00 and dinner cruises return around 23:30; an autumn or winter sunset at 17:00–18:30 is easier. The 75-minute Dentur loop is the right length for most children.

Groups. For eight to twelve people a private yacht costs about the same per head as a premium shared sunset yacht, and you choose the route. Prices are per boat: about $140–360 for two hours on the platforms. Ask whether the quote includes VAT and pier fees, and book at least two days ahead. See the private yacht page.

Limited mobility. Most shared boats are not wheelchair-accessible, and Stambultour's small yacht, for example, is not suitable for limited mobility. A few listings state access explicitly; Headout's 4-course dinner cruise with private table says it is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Ask the operator before booking anything else.

Budget and season: what each price level buys

Budget per person What you get
50–71 TL a commuter ferry across or along the strait with İstanbulkart
200–340 TL an hourly loop or the Şehir Hatları Short Tour (foreign visitors)
640 TL the whole strait on the Long Tour, with lunch ashore at your own cost
$6–13 a big shared sightseeing boat with an app audio guide
$17–56 most shared sunset and day yachts, with snacks
$20–45 a standard dinner cruise with show and soft drinks
$135–280 a Black Sea lunch cruise of 4.5–9 hours
$140–360 per boat a 2-hour private yacht

Platform prices are "from" prices that move with the date; the cards and price checks on this page show today's figures. The same boat often sells at the same price on all three platforms, so pick the platform by cancellation terms and reviews.

Season changes the picture. Autumn is the sweet spot: sunsets at a normal hour and a sea still around 19–23 °C. From mid-April to mid-May the Judas trees (erguvan) turn both shores purple. Summer brings sunsets after 20:00 and hot open decks at midday. Winter brings the lodos, a south-westerly wind that cancels exposed ferry lines (worst in December), and dinner cruises entirely in the dark. During the two religious holidays (bayrams) ferries are crowded with domestic travelers. Our best time to cruise page goes month by month.

Questions about choosing a Bosphorus cruise

Which Bosphorus cruise is best for first-timers?

For the view alone, a 75–90-minute loop (Dentur from Kabataş or Turyol from Eminönü) or a 2-hour platform boat. If you want commentary from a person rather than an app, a sunset yacht with a live guide. If you have a free day, the Şehir Hatları Long Tour shows the whole strait.

Is it better to take the public ferry or a Bosphorus tour?

The public boats are cheaper (200–340 TL for a loop) and cover the same stretch as most 2-hour tours. Tours are worth it for a fixed time, a live guide, snacks, free cancellation or a sunset departure matched to the season.

Sunset cruise or dinner cruise?

A sunset cruise is about the view and lasts 2–2.5 hours; a dinner cruise is about the meal and the show and sails mostly after dark between October and April. Many visitors do the sunset cruise and eat on land.

How far does a 2-hour Bosphorus cruise go?

Usually to Rumeli Hisarı or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet (second) bridge, then back down the Asian shore. It does not reach the Black Sea.

Which Bosphorus cruise is best with kids?

The Dentur loop: 75 minutes, free for children up to 10, several departures a day. On Şehir Hatları tours children under 7 ride free. Avoid late summer sunset and dinner cruises with small children.

Do I need to book a Bosphorus cruise in advance?

Not for a daytime loop, which runs roughly hourly. Book ahead for dinner cruises, summer sunset yachts, private yachts (at least two days) and New Year's Eve.
