Hop-on hop-off bus and Bosphorus cruise in Istanbul: how the combo really works
The hop-on hop-off bus with a Bosphorus cruise is a 24-hour bus pass plus one fixed-time boat of about 90 minutes. Buy it if you want the open-top bus anyway: the bus-only passes cost about the same, but the boat is a separate trip you have to reach on your own.

The hop-on hop-off bus with a Bosphorus cruise sells two separate things on one voucher: a day (or two) on an open-top sightseeing bus, and a single ticket for a sightseeing boat on the strait. The boat does not pick you up from the bus. It leaves from a pier at set times, usually Kabataş or Eminönü, and you walk there yourself.
That is fine if you plan for it, and annoying if you expected a hop-on hop-off boat. None of the boats in these tickets works that way: they are round trips, and your ticket is good for one ride. Here is what each ticket includes, which boat you get, and when the tram and a ferry do the same job for much less.
How the hop-on hop-off bus + Bosphorus cruise ticket works
Every bus-and-boat product on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets follows the same pattern:
- The bus: an open-top double-decker with recorded commentary through headphones, valid for 24 hours from first use (48 hours on the two-route tickets). You get on and off at any stop on the loop.
- The boat: one Bosphorus sightseeing cruise of about 90 minutes, or 1 h 45 on Headout's two-day ticket. Departure times are fixed, the pier is printed on the voucher, and there is no re-boarding.
- What is not included: entry to anything you hop off for (Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Topkapı), food and drinks, and on the Tiqets ticket, headphones.
Headout's listing for its bus pass is the clearest on timings: the first bus leaves around 10:00 from Taksim Square and Sultanahmet, the last at 16:45, roughly every 45 minutes, with popular stops at Taksim, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Spice Bazaar and Dolmabahçe. It also warns that seats on both decks are not guaranteed at peak times. With a bus every 45 minutes, each hop-off costs you up to 45 minutes of waiting. Most people manage three or four stops in a day.
Which hop-on hop-off cruise ticket to buy
There are only a handful of real bus + boat listings, and their ratings are middling across the board (3.9–4.2). The difference is mostly in reviews and in how long the bus pass lasts.

The bus-only passes are the giveaway. GetYourGuide sells day passes without any boat at about $62–77 (3.9–4.0 from 101–211 reviews). At $73 for bus plus cruise, the combo is the better buy if you are going to ride the bus at all. If you are not, skip both.
The Golden Horn bus has no boat
Headout's "Golden Horn Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour" is a separate open-top loop from Sultanahmet to Balat, Fener, Eyüp and Pierre Loti. It includes no cruise, and the ticket cannot be cancelled or rescheduled. It belongs on a Golden Horn day, not on a Bosphorus one. See the Golden Horn page for the ferry that sails the whole Horn.

The bus route: what you see and how long it takes
The stops named in the listings trace one big loop: the old town (Sultanahmet, Eminönü and the Spice Bazaar), Karaköy, the European shore past Dolmabahçe, Taksim, and across the 15 July Martyrs Bridge to Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian side. That bridge is the bus's only crossing to Asia. The two-route tickets add a second loop; Headout names them Red and Blue.

Allow 2.5–3 hours for a full loop without getting off, and more in Istanbul traffic. That is the main weakness: the bus sits in the same traffic as everyone else. The view from the top deck is good. As a way to get around it is slow, and the stops are only as frequent as the 45-minute interval.
Where the stops are worth getting off:
- Dolmabahçe Palace. One foreign ticket for 2,000 TL covers the state rooms, the Harem and the Painting Museum, with a free audio guide. Closed Mondays. The visitor gate is at the Clock Tower, about 10 minutes on foot from Kabataş pier. More on the Dolmabahçe and cruise page.
- Beylerbeyi Palace. 800 TL, or 100 TL for the gardens only. Closed Mondays. It is the one Asian-side sight on the loop, and no Bosphorus cruise stops there.
- The Spice Bazaar. Free entry, two or three minutes from the Eminönü piers, so it pairs well with a boat from Eminönü.
The cruise part: which boat, which pier, when
The listings do not name the boat, so read the voucher. In practice the bus-and-boat tickets put you on one of the two big public-style tour boats:
- Dentur Avrasya from Kabataş: a non-stop loop of about 75–90 minutes up the European shore to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and back along the Asian shore. Dentur's own Kabataş Boğaz Turu sails at 10:30 and 12:40, then hourly from 13:40 to 19:40. See the Kabataş pier guide for where the Dentur landing is.
- Turyol from Eminönü: the hourly boat from Turyol's pier on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge, next to the fish-sandwich boats, to the second bridge and back. See the Eminönü pier guide.
Either way it is a big shared boat with an indoor saloon and an audio guide, not a yacht. The upper deck fills first, so board early. Headout's own tip for summer is to sail between 10:00 and 13:00, because boats fill up after 15:00. The full picture of what these boats do is on the sightseeing cruise page.
Sit on the left going north
On a loop that goes up the European shore, sit on the left (port) side going north for Dolmabahçe, Çırağan and Rumeli Hisarı. The Asian shore (Beylerbeyi, Kuleli, Anadolu Hisarı) passes close on the way back.

Bus + boat, bus only, or tram + ferry?
Here is the honest comparison for one day on the European waterfront plus a cruise.
| On your own | With the bus + boat ticket | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting around | T1 tram to Eminönü, Karaköy and Kabataş, 46.20 TL per ride with an İstanbulkart (card 165 TL) | Open-top bus for 24 h, every ~45 min |
| Crossing to Asia | Ferry Kabataş–Üsküdar 51.81 TL with İstanbulkart | Once, by bus over the first bridge |
| The cruise | Dentur loop from Kabataş, 200 TL online or 250 TL at the booth | One 90-min cruise included |
| Commentary | Your own guidebook | Recorded audio on the bus and an app guide on the boat |
| Total | A few hundred lira | From about $73 |
The İstanbulkart is the city's rechargeable transit card. A contactless bank card also works at the turnstiles, but it pays the single-ticket price (120 TL for a ferry instead of about 50–65 TL with the card). The T1 tram runs along the same European waterfront the bus covers; Metro İstanbul's T1 page lists the stations. The ferries and fares are explained in full on the public ferry page.
The bus earns its price in two cases: you want commentary and a seat with a view without working out transport, or you are with people who cannot walk much between tram stops and piers. Otherwise the tram and ferry are faster on the European side, and the ferry is the better way to reach Asia.
Pros
- One booking covers a day of sightseeing and a cruise
- Recorded commentary on the bus in several languages
- Costs about the same as a bus-only pass
- Good for a first afternoon to get your bearings
Cons
- The cruise is a separate fixed-time boat that you reach on your own
- The full loop takes 2.5–3 hours or more in traffic
- Buses about every 45 minutes, last one around 16:45
- Ratings across the category are only 3.9–4.2
- Palace entries are extra, and the palaces are closed on Mondays
How to plan the day with the bus and the boat
A bus-and-boat day that works
- Read the voucher first: note the cruise pier (Kabataş or Eminönü) and the sailing times.
- Start early. The first bus is around 10:00; ride the full loop once before you hop off anywhere.
- Pick one sight to enter, Dolmabahçe or Beylerbeyi, and avoid Mondays, when both are closed.
- Hop off at Dolmabahçe in the early afternoon and walk about 10 minutes to Kabataş for a midday or afternoon boat.
- Be at the pier 20 minutes early for an upper-deck seat; the Tiqets ticket also asks you to arrive 20 minutes early.
- Get back on the bus before about 16:45, or take the T1 tram home from Kabataş.
Bring headphones for the app guides; the Tiqets ticket doesn't supply them. Take a layer for the boat even in summer: operators warn that the open deck gets windy. Keep some TL cash for drinks and snacks on board.
For cancellations, GetYourGuide allows free cancellation up to 24 hours on most listings, and the Tiqets bus + boat ticket allows it up to 24 hours before. Headout sets it per listing, so read the terms before you pay. If wind or weather cancels the boat, the operator decides, and the platform rebooks or refunds under its own terms.

Hop-on hop-off and Bosphorus cruise FAQ
Does the Istanbul hop-on hop-off bus include a Bosphorus cruise?
Only the combo tickets do. GetYourGuide 414769 and Tiqets 1098279 (about $73) and the two-day tickets include one Bosphorus cruise of about 90 minutes. The plain bus passes include no boat, and the Golden Horn bus has none either.
Where does the Bosphorus cruise leave from on a hop-on hop-off ticket?
The pier is printed on the voucher. It is usually Kabataş (the Dentur Avrasya boat) or Eminönü (Turyol's pier on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge). You get there yourself; the bus does not drop you at the boat.
Can I hop on and off the Bosphorus cruise?
No. The cruise is a single round trip of about 75–90 minutes with no stops and no re-boarding. Only the bus is hop-on hop-off.
How long does the hop-on hop-off bus take in Istanbul?
A full loop takes about 2.5–3 hours, and more in traffic. Buses run roughly every 45 minutes from about 10:00 to 16:45, so plan on three or four stops in a day.
Is the 2-day hop-on hop-off ticket worth it?
Only if you want both routes and plan to use the bus as your transport for two days. The two-day, two-route ticket costs about $97 against $73 for one day, and it has weaker reviews (3.9 from 146).
Which side of the Bosphorus does the bus visit?
Mostly the European side: Sultanahmet, Eminönü, Karaköy, Dolmabahçe and Taksim. It crosses to Asia once, over the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, to Beylerbeyi Palace.
