Bosphorus dinner cruise: which boat, which pier, what you really get

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is a three-hour evening on a big boat with a set menu and a Turkish night show, leaving Kabataş or Karaköy around 20:30. Book a platform listing with free cancellation, check the pier and the drinks option, and skip the window-table upsell unless you are two.

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is not a quiet meal on a yacht. It is a cabaret evening on a large passenger boat: you board around 20:00, the boat sails at 20:30 or 20:45, a set menu arrives at your table, and for three hours dancers work through a programme of whirling dervish, Anatolian folk dances and belly dance while the boat drifts along the lit lower strait. You are back on land between 23:00 and 23:30.

It is good value and a lot of fun if you know what you are buying. The three things that decide your evening are the boat (which you can tell from the pier), the drinks option (soft drinks only, two drinks, or "unlimited" local spirits) and the table (shared by default). This guide covers all three. The deeper questions have their own pages: private and window tables, all-inclusive drinks and hotel pick-up.

Who sails from where: the pier tells you the boat

Dozens of listings, a handful of boats. The platforms sell many dinner cruises under near-identical titles ("Bosphorus Dinner Cruise & Turkish Night Show" is the exact title of two different GetYourGuide products), but nearly all of them board at three spots on the European shore. Once you know the landing, you know roughly which operation you are joining.

Boat or operation Pier Sails What it is
Mega Lüfer boats (sold by HGR Cruise Travel Agency) Kabataş, private landing by the Kadoil petrol station, Meclis-i Mebusan Cd. 34 20:45 (docks about 20:15) Big dinner boats marketed as "yachts"; the 75,000-review listing
Dentur Avrasya Turkish night (Türk Gecesi) Kabataş, Dentur's separate wooden tour pier evening A private ferry company's own dinner boat; several agencies sell seats from this landing
Turyol "Bosfor" Karaköy, Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge, Rıhtım Cd. 17 20:30, back 23:30 A 49.84 m ship licensed for 601 passengers, run by the Turyol co-operative
Orient Bosphorus Karaköy evening, about 3 h Cruise arm of the Orient House Turkish-night brand; sold direct only
Le Vapeur Magique Karaköy evening A dining boat operating since 1976, according to its site

Kabataş is the T1 tram terminus and the lower station of the F1 funicular from Taksim. The Mega Lüfer landing sits right opposite the tram stop; tickets sometimes call it "Dolmabahçe Mosque". The Dentur tour pier is a separate jetty on the same waterfront strip, not the big Dentur ferry terminal. More on the layout in our Kabataş pier guide.

Karaköy is on the T1 tram and the F2 Tünel. Turyol's Bosfor leaves from Turyol's own pier on the Golden Horn side of the bridge's Karaköy end, not from Eminönü, where Turyol runs its daytime ferries. See the Karaköy pier guide.

We know of no dinner boat that boards at Ortaköy or Beşiktaş, whatever a tout tells you.

Same landing, different price tags

The Dentur landing at Kabataş is the published boarding point for listings from at least four sellers: Dentur's own selling brand Pereme Tours (GetYourGuide 419108), Velena Travel's two Tiqets dinners, Tourmania's all-inclusive Tiqets listing, and the GetYourGuide seller Istambul Travel (according to its listing). Their prices ran from about $23 to $79 on the same day, for what looks, from the pier, like the same evening programme. Whether every seller puts you on the same boat on the same night cannot be confirmed, but the lesson holds: several agencies sell seats on the same few boats, so compare inclusions and cancellation terms, not titles.

Headout does not name the boat on any of its dinner listings. Its 20906 meets at Kabataş; for the others, the exact landing is on your voucher. Read it the day before.

The evening hour by hour

Here is a typical evening, based on Turyol's published Bosfor schedule and the programme the operators print. Mega Lüfer runs about 15 minutes later; Velena's direct "Ottoman Nights" cruise gets back around midnight.

A Bosphorus dinner cruise, start to finish
  1. Hotel pick-up rounds beginOnly if your ticket includes transfer; Velena collects between 19:00 and 20:00

  2. Boarding opensTuryol from 20:00 at Karaköy; Mega Lüfer docks about 20:15 at Kabataş

  3. The boat casts offMega Lüfer at 20:45

  4. Meze, salad, then the main courseThe opening act is the whirling dervish, a stage version of the ceremony

  5. Anatolian folk dancesZeybek from the Aegean, Halay; Caucasian dance often with a knife act; Black Sea dance

  6. Belly dance, then a drum show with audience participationFront tables are closest to the action

  7. DJ and dancingSome boats add Latin or flamenco numbers

  8. Back at the pierTransfer guests are driven back to their hotels

Where the boat goes: dinner boats cruise the lower strait between the Old City and the bridges. Operators name Dolmabahçe Palace, the Ortaköy Mosque, the 15 July Martyrs Bridge (the old "Bosphorus Bridge"), Beylerbeyi Palace and the Maiden's Tower; one Tiqets listing also names Anadolu Hisarı, near the second bridge. The boats move slowly while the show runs. This is not a way to see the whole strait; for that, take the public Long Tour by day.

Light: with boarding at 20:00–20:45, the whole cruise is in darkness from mid-August to early May. Only from May to early August do you leave in daylight or sunset light. If seeing the city by day matters, do a sunset cruise earlier and keep the dinner boat for the lights.

What's included, and what costs extra

The menu

Every operator serves a fixed set menu in fixed portions, not à la carte. The usual sequence is a meze plate, green salad, one main and a dessert plate or fruit. Turyol's printed menu is typical: a starter plate (spicy paste, fava, muhammara, haydari, feta, cheese, tomato, cucumber), green salad, a fried paçanga pastry, then grilled meatballs, spicy chicken skewers or baked seasonal fish, and Turkish desserts. Mega Lüfer's resellers list a meze plate, a choice of mixed grill, fish or vegetarian, and dessert with fruit. Velena's direct "Ottoman Nights" is the exception, with an open buffet.

Vegetarian mains are offered on request on most boats. Headout's two big listings (31582 and 20906) also accept pescatarian and halal requests. No operator certifies halal food, so ask the operator directly when you book.

The drinks: three very different tiers

  1. Unlimited soft drinks. The base ticket on most listings, including the Mega Lüfer private-table cruise. Alcohol is sold on board or as an upgrade.
  2. Two drinks. Some "drinks included" tickets mean exactly two local alcoholic or soft drinks. Velena's Tiqets dinners (976936 and 976935) work this way, despite a summary that says "unlimited".
  3. Unlimited local alcohol. Rakı (the anise spirit), beer, house wine, vodka and gin. Imported brands are excluded; Tourmania's Tiqets listing says so explicitly.

The price step for alcohol, direct: Turyol $50 → $80, Velena €40 → €75, Orient Bosphorus €50 → €70. You cannot bring your own bottle on board.

The show

The programme is almost identical across boats: whirling dervish → Anatolian folk dances → Romani (Roman) dance → Caucasian dance → Black Sea dance → belly dance → drum show with audience participation → DJ. The dervish act on a dinner boat is a stage performance, not the religious sema ceremony. The Ministry of Culture's own Sufi music ensemble has said it disapproves of sema at entertainment events. If you want the real ceremony, Hodjapasha in Sirkeci holds one every day at 19:00 (60 minutes, age 7+, no photos). Details are in our Turkish night show guide and on hodjapasha.com.

What is extra on board

  • Alcohol, unless your ticket includes a package
  • Tips: listed as excluded on most listings, and small cash tips are customary
  • Professional photos taken on board
  • Food or drinks outside the set menu
  • Hotel transfer, unless it is in the ticket (it is included with Turyol and Velena when you book direct)

Carry some Turkish lira in cash for tips and drinks, even on a prepaid ticket. Smoking is banned in the indoor saloons.

Seat tiers: shared, private, stage-side and window tables

The table is the main upsell, and the cheapest "from" price almost always means the bottom rung. One agency group's price list shows the whole ladder: standard shared table without alcohol €30, standard with alcohol €40, close to the show €40–60, VIP front rows €60–75, romantic table with transfer €75, birthday table €120, premium VIP with a private car €200.

What the tiers mean in practice:

  • Shared table is the default unless the listing says "private". You sit with strangers at a long table.
  • Private table means your party alone at a small table. On Headout's 31582 it applies only to group bookings: a solo traveler is seated with other guests. Turyol sells a private table on the Bosfor's upper floor for $10 more, direct.
  • Window table gives you the view, but on at least one Headout listing (39794) window-side private tables are for bookings of exactly two; larger groups get shared tables of four or six.
  • Front-of-stage puts you close to the dancers, and inside the audience-participation segment.

On a boat carrying hundreds, a window seat is the difference between watching Istanbul slide past and watching the back of someone's head. For couples it is the one upgrade worth paying for. The private table guide lists which listings sell which seat.

Bosphorus dinner cruise prices: platforms vs direct

On the platforms, a standard dinner cruise with show and soft drinks runs from about $20 to $40 per person. GetYourGuide's median for this type is around $39, Headout's around $30. Those are "from" prices: alcohol, a better table and transfer push the same listing up.

Direct prices, as the operators publish them:

Operator Direct price per person Cancellation when booked direct
Turyol Bosfor $50 without alcohol, $80 with; free transfer; private table +$10 No refunds; one date change up to 48 h before
Velena "Ottoman Nights" €40 soft drinks, €75 unlimited local alcohol; hotel pick-up Free up to 24 h
Orient Bosphorus €50 classic, €70 premium with alcohol, €120 à la carte Check when booking
Dentur / Pereme Tours Price on pereme.com.tr Free up to 24 h

The headline: GetYourGuide's listing tied to Turyol's Bosfor (438511) starts at about $29, far below Turyol's own $50 rack rate, and comes with GetYourGuide's free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Turyol's direct tickets on bosfordinnercruise.com cannot be refunded at all. The platform's "from" price is usually the no-alcohol, no-pick-up option, so compare like with like. The platform is still the safer way to book.

The private-table dinner sells on all three platforms under different sellers. On the day this page was updated, Headout was the cheapest of the three, GetYourGuide close behind and Tiqets dearest. Boat, start time and inclusions may differ:

The dervish-show dinner is the opposite case. GetYourGuide and Headout sit around $30, while the Tiqets version (Velena's €70 listing, with two drinks) costs more than double. The options are not identical, but note that Velena's own site sells its dinner with unlimited local alcohol for €75:

Cancellation, in one paragraph

GetYourGuide dinner listings mostly cancel free up to 24 hours before, with reserve now, pay later. Headout's dinner cruises are typically free to 24 hours, but its Galata Tower + dinner and Dolmabahçe + dinner combos cannot be cancelled at all. On Tiqets it depends on the listing: Velena's 976936 is free until 4 hours before, while Tourmania's all-inclusive 1084290 is non-refundable. If the weather stops the boat, the operator decides, and the platform rebooks or refunds under its own terms. Our platform comparison covers the rest.

Our picks for a dinner cruise

1

First dinner cruise, couples and families

The most-reviewed Istanbul product on GetYourGuide (over 75,000 reviews, 4.8). Your party gets its own table, and the Mega Lüfer boats leave from the Kadoil landing at Kabataş, steps from the T1 tram. Soft drinks included, alcohol extra.

2

Drinkers and big groups

The listing tied to Turyol's 601-passenger Bosfor from Karaköy, with "unlimited drinks" in the description and 14,500+ reviews. Cheaper than booking Turyol direct, and cancellable.

3

Couples who want the best price today

Headout's top dinner listing, 4.9 from over 4,000 reviews, private table for groups of two or more. Usually free to cancel up to 24 h before. Check that on the listing.

4

Budget window seat

The cheapest window-table listing on GetYourGuide (4.5 from 650+ reviews), listed as leaving from the Old City port. Good if the view matters most.

Our verdict: for a first dinner cruise, book GetYourGuide 415437 or Headout 31582 with soft drinks and a private table, and buy a drink or two on board. If you will drink through the evening, take a listing with unlimited local alcohol; Turyol's Bosfor is the classic choice. Avoid non-refundable listings unless the saving is real.

Who runs what: read our reviews of Mega Lüfer, Turyol and Dentur Avrasya before you choose between them.

Getting there, timing and practical tips

How to read a dinner-cruise listing before you pay

  1. Find the pier: Kabataş (which landing?) or Karaköy. If the listing says "central Istanbul", the exact point will be on the voucher.
  2. Check the drinks line: soft drinks only, two drinks, or unlimited local alcohol.
  3. Check the table: "private" or "window" must be in the option you pick, not just in the title.
  4. Check pick-up: only central European-side hotels qualify; none of the listings covers Kadıköy, Üsküdar or airport hotels.
  5. Check cancellation: free to 24 h is normal; "non-refundable" is a reason to look at the next listing.

Pick-up. Shuttles collect from about 19:00 for a 20:00–20:45 sailing, and only from central hotels on the European side (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Şişli, Beyoğlu, Sirkeci, Aksaray, Karaköy, Kabataş and similar). Be in the lobby 10–15 minutes early. If you stay in Kadıköy or Üsküdar, take a ferry across to Karaköy or Kabataş instead.

Arrive early. Operators ask you to be at the pier 20–30 minutes before departure. Bring a photo ID: dinner boats ask for it, and Headout's 20906 asks foreign guests for passport details on arrival.

Dress. Smart-casual is usual. Bring long sleeves or a shawl: evenings on the water are colder than on land, and operators warn about wind on the open deck.

Kids. Turyol: under 3 free, 3–7 half price. One agency group charges half price for ages 3–6. Orient Bosphorus runs a soft-drink "family" cruise; its alcohol cruise is pitched at adults. The show is family-friendly, but the evening ends at 23:30.

Accessibility. Most shared boats are not wheelchair accessible. Headout lists 20906 as wheelchair, pram and stroller accessible; ask before booking anything else.

New Year's Eve is a separate market: about 15 GetYourGuide listings from $166 to $550, departures around 21:00, and none on Headout or Tiqets. See our New Year's Eve cruise guide.

Is a Bosphorus dinner cruise worth it?

Pros

  • Dinner, a show and three hours on the water from about $20–40 online
  • The lit bridges and palaces from the water, without planning anything
  • Free cancellation and pick-up on many listings
  • A lively, easy night out for families and groups

Cons

  • Big boats: the Bosfor alone is licensed for 601 passengers
  • Set menu in fixed portions; food is fine, not the reason to go
  • Shared table unless you pay for private; window seats cost extra
  • Pick-up starts an hour or more before sailing; dark for most of the year
  • The dervish act is cabaret, not the ceremony

It is worth it if you want a fun, social evening with a show and you like the city at night. It is not worth it if you want a quiet, romantic dinner or real sightseeing. For a calm dinner for two, a private yacht with catering costs far more but is a different experience. To see the lit bridges without the show, a no-dinner night cruise costs about $11.
