Istanbul food tour with a ferry to Kadıköy: which one to book

The classic Istanbul food tour starts near the Spice Bazaar, crosses the Bosphorus on a city ferry and ends in Kadıköy's market. Group tours run from $28 to $135; pay for the reviewed ones, and skip anything that sells the ferry as a cruise.

An Istanbul food tour with a ferry ride is two walks joined by a boat: a morning or evening on the European side around the Spice Bazaar, then the commuter ferry across the Bosphorus, then the market lanes of Kadıköy on the Asian side, where most of the eating happens. The boat is an ordinary city ferry, the one locals take to work. It is a good crossing with a view of the Old City and the Maiden's Tower, but it is not a Bosphorus cruise and does not sail up the strait.

That matters for planning. If you want both food and the strait, book the food tour for the eating and a separate sightseeing cruise for the view; don't expect one product to do both. Below is how the tours differ, which ones have real review numbers behind them, and how to do the same route on your own for the price of a ferry fare.

How a food tour with a ferry works

Nearly every listing follows the same shape. You meet the guide on the European side, usually near the Spice Bazaar, Eminönü or Sirkeci; the Spice Bazaar is two or three minutes from the Eminönü piers. You taste your way through a few stops there, walk to the pier, and cross by public ferry. On the Asian side the tour ends in Kadıköy's Çarşı, the market lanes around the fish market, five minutes from the landing.

The crossing itself is short and cheap: Eminönü or Karaköy to Kadıköy is 65.21 TL with an İstanbulkart (the city transport card), the same fare on Şehir Hatları and Turyol boats. Ask before you book whether the ferry fare is included; one Tiqets listing states that the ferry ticket is included, and another Asian-side walk covers only one leg. If you pay yourself without an İstanbulkart, a contactless bank card is charged 120 TL per ride.

On the way across, sit on the open deck at the back if the weather allows: you get the Old City skyline behind you and the Maiden's Tower off the Üsküdar shore. Ferries into Kadıköy also pass the old Haydarpaşa station.

Which food tour: prices and reviews compared

The review counts below tell you more than the star ratings, which are almost all 4.8–5.0. Prices are "from" prices per person on GetYourGuide and move daily; the cards show today's.

Three of these have the volume to trust: the all-day 20+ tastings tour, the 6-hour ferry tour and the evening Kadıköy tour. The evening one is the most reviewed product that names Kadıköy in its title. Everything under about 100 reviews is new or small; that is not a reason to avoid it, just a reason to read the latest reviews rather than the average.

Headout sells a tour under exactly the same name as the 20+ tastings tour, for about the same price, with no reviews there yet. Headout also lists several Europe-to-Asia street-food walks from about $40 to $81, all without reviews so far. If it is the same tour at the same price, book where the cancellation terms suit you; the reviews sit on GetYourGuide.

Day or evening tour?

Day tours see the markets working: fishmongers, spice sellers, bakeries. Evening tours trade that for the street-food side of Kadıköy, when the district is at its busiest.

Think about the crossing too. Istanbul is on UTC+3 all year, so in winter the sun sets early: about 18:25 in mid-October, 18:01 on 1 November, as early as 17:37 in early December. An evening tour from October to April usually crosses at dusk or in the dark, with the city lights on. From May to August, sunset is after 20:00 and an evening tour crosses in daylight. If you want the sunset from the ferry, check the start time against the season rather than assuming "evening" means golden hour.

The cheapest evening listing, a 3-hour guided evening food tour with ferry from $89, is rated 5.0 from 12 reviews. The well-tested evening choice is the 4-hour Kadıköy tour above.

The cheap tours: what $28–38 buys

The two budget listings, the street food and culture tour from $28 and the Europe to Asia market tour from $38, both run about four hours. The $38 tour has 104 reviews at 4.8, which is a real track record. What a cheap tour usually saves on is the number and size of tastings, not the ferry or the guide; the listings do not state a tasting count, so ask before you book and compare it with the 14+ and 20+ promised by the dearer tours.

If you are a light eater or traveling with children, a cheaper tour with fewer stops can be the better fit. If you plan to skip lunch and dinner, the 20+ tastings tour is the better deal per bite.

Private food tours and cooking classes in Kadıköy

See everything on GetYourGuide →See everything on Headout →See everything on Tiqets →Prices checked on October 17, 2026

Private tours cost more per head but run at your pace: a private local food and markets experience from $169 (4.9 from 27 reviews), or a private food tour across Europe and Asia from $100 with a single review so far. A Kadıköy food tour shown "from $438" is priced at a private level; open the options before deciding it is expensive or cheap for your group.

Cooking is the other way to go. A 2-hour meze cooking class for beginners in Kadıköy starts from $144 (4.5 from 16 reviews), and a cooking class with a local chef on the Asian side from $201 has only three reviews so far. A class is also the indoor plan for a cold or rainy day.

What's included, what isn't

  • Food and soft drinks: included on every tour, in the amounts each listing promises. One Tiqets food tour, for example, includes a Turkish breakfast in the Old City, non-alcoholic drinks, the ferry ticket and 8–9 stops in Kadıköy.
  • The ferry fare: usually part of the tour; ask, because some walks include only the outbound leg.
  • Alcohol: not something to assume. Ask if rakı (the anise spirit served with meze) is part of the evening.
  • Tips: excluded on the listings. Small cash tips for the guide are customary, so carry some lira.
  • Meeting point: a fixed spot on the European side, usually in Eminönü or Sirkeci; the tour ends in Kadıköy. Getting back is on you: a ferry to Eminönü, Karaköy or Beşiktaş for 65.21 TL.
  • Dietary needs: tell the operator when you book, not at the first stop.

Doing the route on your own

You can walk the same line without a guide. You will miss the stories and the stalls a guide knows, but you choose what and how much you eat.

Spice Bazaar to Kadıköy on your own

  1. Start at the Spice Bazaar in Eminönü, two or three minutes from the piers.
  2. Get an İstanbulkart (the card costs 165 TL) and load enough for two crossings.
  3. Take a ferry to Kadıköy from Eminönü. Şehir Hatları boats and Turyol boats both run the route; Turyol's Eminönü pier is on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge and lands at its Kadıköy Metro pier.
  4. In Kadıköy, walk into the Çarşı, the market lanes around the fish market.
  5. Eat at Çiya: three separate restaurants a few metres apart; Çiya Sofrası has the counter of regional home cooking.
  6. Walk north to the Yeldeğirmeni murals or south to Moda, then take the ferry back.

Turyol publishes its piers on turyol.com; Şehir Hatları times are on sehirhatlari.istanbul, and fares and card rules on istanbulkart.istanbul. The Kadıköy pier guide shows which landing is which, and the Eminönü pier guide does the same on the European side.

Pairing it with a Bosphorus cruise

A food tour fills a morning or an evening; a cruise fills the other half. Three combinations work well:

  • Afternoon cruise, evening food tour. Take a 2-hour sightseeing cruise from Eminönü or Kabataş after lunch, then join an evening food tour. You see the palaces and bridges in daylight and Kadıköy at night.
  • Morning food tour, sunset on the Asian side. End the food tour in Kadıköy, take the ferry to Üsküdar and watch the sunset from Salacak facing the Maiden's Tower. It is free; see the Asian side guide.
  • Skip the dinner cruise. If you were choosing between a dinner cruise and an evening food tour, know that they are different evenings: a set menu and a show for hundreds of people on a big boat, or many small plates on foot in a small group. If food is the priority, the land option wins.

Few cruises start in Kadıköy. The public Moonlight (Mehtap) tour calls there at 18:05, but only on Saturdays in the summer timetable, and it is not running now.

Which Istanbul food tour includes a ferry to Asia?

Most food tours that mention "two continents" or "Europe to Asia" start near the Spice Bazaar or Eminönü, cross on a public ferry and end in Kadıköy's market. The most reviewed are the 20+ tastings tour (1,406 reviews), the 6-hour ferry tour (880) and the evening Kadıköy tour (573).

How much does a food tour in Kadıköy cost?

Group tours cost from $28 to $135 per person. Private food tours start around $100–169 per booking, and cooking classes in Kadıköy from $144.

Is the ferry on a food tour a Bosphorus cruise?

No. It is the regular city ferry straight across to Kadıköy. It gives a good view of the Old City but does not sail up the strait. Book a separate cruise for that.

Is the ferry fare included in a food tour?

Usually, but check the listing. Some walks include only the outbound ferry. On your own the crossing costs 65.21 TL with an İstanbulkart or 120 TL with a contactless bank card.

Day or evening food tour in Istanbul?

Day tours see the markets working; evening tours see Kadıköy at its busiest. From October to April an evening tour usually crosses after sunset, with the city lights on.
