Most Bosphorus activities sold online are really cruises with something added: a swim stop, a show, a lunch. The strait itself is an international shipping lane with a strong surface current, so the list of things you can do in the water is short. This page sorts what exists from what only exists in listing titles, with prices, places and the catches.

Canoe by the Maiden's Tower

The one way to get onto the Bosphorus under your own power is a canoe session run by Istanbul Workshops from the Salacak–Harem shore in Üsküdar. You get a single or double canoe or kayak, a life jacket, a dry bag, a safety briefing and a guide, then about 50 minutes on the water around the Maiden's Tower, and tea afterwards. Groups are capped at 14.

It is not for everyone: under-16s, pregnant women and people with back problems cannot join. The operator's own price is $30; GetYourGuide charges a few dollars more but gives you its cancellation terms, while tickets sold through some Turkish resellers are non-refundable. The operator's pages name two different meeting points, so confirm yours on booking. The full picture, with how to get to Salacak, is on the canoe and kayak page.

Swimming: race day, swim-stop cruises and Black Sea beaches

You do not swim in the city stretch of the Bosphorus. Ships pass all day and the surface current runs south at several knots near the narrows. There are three legal ways to get wet.

The Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swim. Once a year the Turkish National Olympic Committee closes the strait to shipping for a race of about 6.5 km from Kanlıca on the Asian side to Kuruçeşme on the European side, swum with the current. It is held on a Sunday in late July or August, and recent editions have drawn about 2,500 swimmers from close to 80 countries. Foreign places sell out fast. Applications and the participation conditions are on the official site, bogazici.olimpiyat.org.tr, which also sells tour-boat tickets to watch the race.

A cruise with a swim stop. The Black Sea lunch cruises stop off Poyrazköy, at the mouth of the strait, in summer. Princes' Islands boat trips anchor in a cove in the Sea of Marmara. Both depend on the weather: on days when the poyraz (north-easterly wind) raises waves, the boats stay in sheltered water.

Lowest adult price per person in US dollars, checked on October 17, 2026. Boat, departure time and what is included differ between listings: open each one before you pay.

These are the same kind of 4.5–5-hour lunch cruise on three platforms. Tiqets' version, from Velena Travel, was the cheapest today and names Poyrazköy as the swim stop; Headout's has by far the most reviews. Departure, lunch and swim stop may differ, so read each listing. More on the route in the Black Sea cruise guide.

A Black Sea beach. Kilyos on the European side is the nearest, 48 minutes on bus 151 from the Hacıosman metro station. Its Solar Beach is a party beach; Burç Beach is the one for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Rip currents cause about 70 % of drownings on this coast, so swim only where lifeguards are on duty, and check the district notices on the morning you go: the district governors ban swimming day by day when the poyraz blows. Beach details and the safety rules are on the swimming page.

Turkish night shows and the whirling dervishes

There are two very different things here, and most listings blur them.

The real Mevlevi ceremony. Hodjapasha, a cultural centre in a converted 15th-century double hamam in Sirkeci, holds the whirling dervish ceremony every day at 19:00. It lasts 60 minutes, the minimum age is 7, and photos and video are not allowed because it is a religious ceremony. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 20:30 the same building stages Rhythm of the Dance, a 65-minute dance show with belly dance and a fire act, where photos without flash are fine. Platform titles sometimes mix the two, so check which one you are buying. Times are on hodjapasha.com.

The stage show. Every dinner cruise has a Turkish-night programme: a dervish act, Anatolian folk dances, Roman and Caucasian dances, a belly dancer and a DJ. It is entertainment, and the ministry's own Sufi ensemble disapproves of the sema being staged at such events. If you want the show with a view, the dinner cruise is the way to get it.

On land, Sultana's in Elmadağ, near Taksim, runs a dinner and show from 20:45 to 22:45. It has no Bosphorus view whatever some listings suggest. One more catch: GetYourGuide's "Turkish Night Show Ticket" for a few dollars is a show seat on a boat, not a land venue. Headout also sells a "Bosphorus-view tavern" show with no reviews and no named venue; we would skip it. The Turkish night show guide compares all of them.

Perfume workshop "with Bosphorus view"

The perfume-making workshop is a real class, and GetYourGuide's listing is rated 5.0 from more than 4,600 reviews: you mix your own 50 ml bottle from more than 50 ingredients, with tea, coffee and a recipe card to take home. The Bosphorus view needs explaining. Istanbul Workshops, which runs this workshop on its own site and on Tiqets, meets the group in Sirkeci, and its studio is in Üsküdar on the Asian side, not in Galata or Karaköy. Check the meeting point on the listing you book, and budget the ferry crossing into your afternoon.

GetYourGuide's listing was the cheaper of the two today and is the one with the reviews; Headout's had none yet.

Other things to do by the water

  • Zipline at Nakkaştepe. A 250 m line in a park in Üsküdar near the Asian end of the first bridge, up to 80 km/h. It is rated only 3.7 from 341 reviews on GetYourGuide, the weakest score of anything on this page.
  • Watch the anglers. Shore anglers line the Üsküdar promenade, a free and very Istanbul scene. There is no bookable fishing trip on any platform.
  • Sunset at Salacak. The waterfront facing the Maiden's Tower and the Old City skyline is where locals watch the sun go down, for nothing. It is a short walk from Üsküdar's Marmaray and M5 stations; see the Asian side guide.
  • Visit the Maiden's Tower. Boats leave Salacak about every 30 minutes and Karaköy six times a day; entry is €27 plus 110 TL for the boat, with the last boat back at 17:45.
  • Speedboats. A couple of Bosphorus speedboat rides are listed on Headout and GetYourGuide, but with no reviews yet we cannot say what you get.

What you cannot book on the Bosphorus

Some activities show up in travel articles but not on the water:

Cons

  • No recreational diving: the strait is a shipping lane, and no platform sells a dive.
  • No jet ski on the strait; Kilyos beaches rent them on the Black Sea.
  • No fishing-boat trips on GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets.
  • No "Turkish bath with a Bosphorus view": the bookable hamams are in the Old City and Beyoğlu.
  • No Galata Tower dinner show: the restaurant closed when the tower became a museum in 2020.
  • No swimming in the city stretch except on race day.

If you came for the water rather than an activity, the best value is still a boat. The cruise overview compares every type, from the 200 TL ferry loop to private yachts, and the best time guide tells you when the sea is warm enough for a swim stop: about 21–25 °C in summer, still 19–23 °C in early autumn.

Bosphorus activities FAQ

Can you kayak or canoe on the Bosphorus?

Yes, on a guided canoe session around the Maiden's Tower from the Salacak shore in Üsküdar: about 50 minutes on the water, $30 direct or from about $35 on GetYourGuide. Under-16s cannot take part.

Can you swim in the Bosphorus?

Not in the city stretch, which is a busy shipping lane with a strong current. The exception is the Cross-Continental Swim, held on a Sunday in late July or August, when the strait is closed to ships. Swim stops on cruises are at Poyrazköy on the Black Sea or in island coves.

Where can I see the whirling dervishes in Istanbul?

At Hodjapasha in Sirkeci, daily at 19:00, 60 minutes, age 7 and up, no photos. The dervish act on dinner cruises is a stage performance, not the ceremony.

Is there a Turkish bath with a Bosphorus view?

No bookable one. The hamams sold online are in the Old City and Beyoğlu, away from the water.

Are there fishing trips on the Bosphorus?

None on GetYourGuide, Headout or Tiqets. You will see shore anglers on the Üsküdar promenade, but there is no boat trip to book.

What can kids do on the Bosphorus?

A cruise is the best bet: Dentur's loop is free for children up to 10. The canoe session is closed to under-16s, and the dervish ceremony needs a minimum age of 7.
