Bosphorus cruises compared: ferry tours, sightseeing boats, yachts and dinner ships

A Bosphorus cruise can be a 75-minute ferry loop for 200 TL, a 2-hour tour boat with an app guide, a 16-seat sunset yacht or a 600-seat dinner ship. Most of them turn at the second bridge, so choose by boat size, time of day and what the price includes.

There are three very different things sold under the name Bosphorus cruise: the city's own ferries (the vapur), the hourly tour boats of the private ferry companies, and the products on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets, which range from $6 seats on a big shared boat to dinner ships and private yachts. They all sail the same water. The differences are how many people share the deck, how far north the boat goes, whether someone explains what you see, and what the ticket includes.

This page puts every type side by side, names the piers and the boats where they are known, and tells you where the catches are. If you only want a fast answer, read the next two sections. The type pages linked below go into detail.

Şehir Hatları times are the winter timetable; check sehirhatlari.istanbul or the booth on the day.

Which Bosphorus cruise to book

Start with what you want from the trip, not with the boat's name.

  • Just the view, cheaply: take Dentur's 75-minute loop from Kabataş, Beşiktaş or Üsküdar, or the Şehir Hatları Short Tour from Eminönü. Both are real ferries run by ferry companies, not agencies. Details are in the public ferry guide.
  • The whole strait: only the Şehir Hatları Long Tour goes all the way to Anadolu Kavağı by the Black Sea mouth. Nothing that lasts two hours can do that, whatever a tout's leaflet shows.
  • A guided two hours with a drink: a platform sightseeing cruise on a big shared boat, from $6–13. The "audio guide" is an app on your phone, so bring headphones.
  • Sunset in a small group: a shared yacht, about $17–75. The real small ones carry 16–30 people; a "yacht" for 40 or more is a tour boat built to look like one. See the sunset cruise guide.
  • An evening out: a dinner cruise with a Turkish night show. Expect a shared table, a set menu and several hundred other guests.
  • A group of 8–12 people: a private yacht is priced per boat, and split between you it costs about the same per head as a premium shared yacht.

Our picks by type

1

Small-group yacht, day or sunset

Genuinely small: up to 16 people on a 20 m yacht from Azapkapı near Karaköy, snacks and fruit, app audio guide. 4.9 from over 4,000 reviews.

2

Cheapest well-reviewed two hours

A big shared boat sold as a "mega yacht", with day, sunset and night slots and add-ons for snacks or dinner. Listing copy points to the Mega Lüfer boats at Kabataş.

3

Sunset with a live guide

Golden City sails from Kabataş to the second bridge with a live English guide, baklava, fruit and lemonade, up to 40 guests. Alcohol is sold at the bar.

4

First dinner cruise

The most-reviewed cruise in Istanbul: over 75,000 reviews. Sold by HGR Cruise Travel Agency aboard the Mega Lüfer boats from Kabataş, sailing 20:45.

Public ferry or tour boat: the 340 TL question

The city's ferries are the cheapest way onto the water and the most local. Foreign visitors pay double on the Şehir Hatları tours (640 TL for the Long Tour, 340 TL for the Short Tour; Turkish citizens pay 320 and 170 TL), and the Short Tour is still cheaper than most platform cruises. The catch: one sailing a day in winter, no commentary on Şehir Hatları, tickets only at the booth, and no İstanbulkart on any tour.

Between the two sit the private ferry companies. Dentur Avrasya's Boğaz Turu (Bosphorus tour) runs non-stop up the European shore, turns at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge and comes back along the Asian shore in about 75 minutes, with announcements in Turkish and English. Its own booking page lists the times and fares: denturavrasya.com. Turyol, a co-operative of boat owners, runs a similar loop of about 90 minutes roughly every hour from its pier on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge at Eminönü, for about 300 TL at the booth (Turyol does not publish prices; its route is described on turyol.com).

My take: if you are near Kabataş and only want the view, the Dentur loop is hard to beat. If you prefer to book ahead from home, want a sunset or night slot, or like having the landmarks explained in your language, a platform boat for under $13 is fair value.

Sightseeing cruise: the two-hour loop

Most visitors end up here. The standard loop leaves Eminönü or Kabataş, runs up the European shore past Dolmabahçe, Çırağan and the Ortaköy Mosque, passes under the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, continues past Bebek and Rumeli Hisarı, turns at or just past the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge and returns along the Asian shore past Anadolu Hisarı, Küçüksu, Kuleli and Beylerbeyi Palace. Some turn earlier, at Rumeli Hisarı.

The $5–13 listings are big shared boats with indoor saloons, not yachts. That is not a complaint: Sea Land's boat, for example, has indoor seating, toilets and self-service tea. Board early if you want an upper-deck seat. Sit on the left going north for the European palaces and on the right coming back.

Lowest adult price per person in US dollars, checked on October 17, 2026. Boat, departure time and what is included differ between listings: open each one before you pay.

On the day of writing the GetYourGuide listing was the cheapest of the three, and it has by far the most reviews. Boat, departure times and inclusions can differ between platforms, so open the listing before paying. Headout's sightseeing cruise cannot be cancelled or rescheduled once booked, which matters if the weather is uncertain. The full comparison, with the pier for each product, is on the sightseeing cruise page.

Sunset and "yacht" cruises: check the group size

"Yacht" is the most stretched word on the Bosphorus. Under Turkish rules a commercial yacht carries at most 36 passengers, so anything sold for 40 or more is a yacht-style tour boat. The genuinely small boats start at about $17 and carry 16–30 people. All shared yachts serve snacks and soft drinks, not a meal, and wine only on the few listings that say so.

Timing matters more than the boat. Board about 75–90 minutes before sunset: around 17:00 in mid-October, 19:00 in May and August, 16:15 in December. A fixed "4 PM or 5 PM sunset" slot only catches the sunset in autumn and winter. The sun always sets over the European side, so it is on your left going north and on your right coming back. Bridge lights come on in the half hour after sunset.

These three are different boats from different suppliers, so compare what each includes rather than the price alone. The Headout listing is a larger shared yacht and cannot be cancelled. The GetYourGuide one is the 16-person Stambultour boat from Azapkapı, not Kabataş. Note also that some trips end at a different pier from the one they start at: the Golden Horn sunset yacht sold on all three platforms starts at Kabataş and ends at Karaköy.

Dinner cruise with Turkish night show

A Bosphorus dinner cruise is a big boat, a set menu and a stage show between about 20:00 and 23:30. The menu is a meze plate, salad, one main course (meatballs, chicken, fish or vegetarian) and dessert. The show usually runs from a whirling dervish act (a stage performance, not the religious ceremony) through Anatolian folk dances and a belly dancer to a DJ. From October to April the whole cruise is in the dark; only from May to early August do you leave in daylight.

The pier tells you the boat:

  • Kabataş, private landing by the Kadoil petrol station (Meclis-i Mebusan Cd. 34, signposted "Dolmabahçe Mosque" on some tickets): the Mega Lüfer boats, boarding around 20:00–20:15 and sailing 20:45.
  • Kabataş, Dentur's wooden tour pier: Dentur's own Turkish-night cruise, and several agencies selling seats on the same few boats.
  • Karaköy, Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge: Turyol's Bosfor ship (601 passengers, boarding 20:00, sails 20:30, back 23:30), plus Orient Bosphorus and Le Vapeur Magique.

Turyol sells Bosfor directly at 50 USD, or 80 USD with unlimited local drinks, with free hotel transfer and a private table upstairs for 10 USD more (bosfordinnercruise.com). Direct tickets are non-refundable with one date change allowed at least 48 hours ahead. Platform listings are often cheaper and cancel free up to 24 hours before.

Three things to know before you choose a tier. A shared table is the default, and private tables need two or more guests. "Unlimited drinks" means local spirits such as rakı (the aniseed spirit), beer, house wine and vodka; imported brands cost extra. And the window table is an upsell worth paying only if you will sit for the whole evening. Read the dinner cruise guide for tiers, menus and pick-up.

Longer, earlier and special cruises

  • Full Bosphorus and the Black Sea. The public Long Tour (640 TL for foreign visitors) gives you about 2.5 hours at Anadolu Kavağı for Yoros Castle and a fish lunch, with only one boat back at 15:00. The platform lunch cruises, 4.5–9 hours, add food, a guide and in summer a swim stop at Poyrazköy. They look out of the strait's mouth rather than sail the sea. The €150 lunch cruise sells at the same price on all three platforms; see the Black Sea cruise guide.
  • Morning and brunch. Morning light falls on the European palaces. GetYourGuide 992923, a breakfast yacht, is the reviewed choice; details on the morning cruise page.
  • Night without dinner. A 2-hour evening loop under the lit bridges costs from about $11 on GetYourGuide 986343. From October to March even a 19:00 departure is fully dark.
  • Golden Horn. Most "Golden Horn" cruises only dip into its mouth, and cable-car combos reach Eyüp by bus. Only the public Haliç ferry sails the whole Horn.
  • Private yacht. Priced per boat, 2 hours minimum, crew and fuel included, food and alcohol extra. Ask whether the quote includes VAT and pier fees.
  • New Year's Eve. About fifteen listings, all on GetYourGuide, from $166 to $550. Book early in December.
  • Princes' Islands. These are in the Sea of Marmara, not on the Bosphorus. The boats leave from Eminönü, Kabataş and Bostancı.

Bosphorus cruise piers and the departures board

There is no single "Bosphorus cruise pier". Eminönü alone has three boarding points: the Şehir Hatları tour booth east of the Galata Bridge, Turyol's pier on the Golden Horn side next to the fish-sandwich boats, and agency boats in between. Kabataş is a strip of separate landings along Meclis-i Mebusan Caddesi: the city ferry pier, the Dentur terminal, Dentur's wooden tour pier and the private yacht landing by the petrol station. The exact boarding point is often only in your voucher or sent by WhatsApp, so check it the day before. The piers guide has walking directions for each.

Booking, cancellation and what goes wrong

Where to book. GetYourGuide has by far the biggest Istanbul cruise selection and review base, free cancellation up to 24 hours before on most listings, and reserve now, pay later. Headout is strong on dinner cruises and ticket-plus-cruise combos, but its two biggest Istanbul cruise sellers cannot be cancelled, so read the policy line. Tiqets names the legal supplier on every product, which is useful, and sells the cheaper €120 Black Sea variants. The platform comparison covers the details.

Weather. The lodos, a strong south-westerly wind, cancels exposed ferry lines several times each winter, with December the worst month. Fog is usually a morning problem. The operator or captain decides whether a cruise sails; the platforms then rebook or refund under their terms. Do not plan the Long Tour for your last day in winter.

Crowds. In summer, boats fill up after 15:00; board between 10:00 and 13:00 for a quieter deck. Bayram (religious holiday) weeks bring domestic crowds onto the ferries.

Pick-ups. Hotel pick-up covers central European-side hotels only (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Şişli, Beyoğlu, Sirkeci, Aksaray, Karaköy, Kabataş). If you stay in Kadıköy or Üsküdar, plan to get to the pier yourself. Pick-up rounds can take an hour, so be in the lobby 10–15 minutes early.

Money and comfort. Platform prices are in dollars or euros; pier booths sell in lira and prefer cash, although Dentur takes cards. Carry some lira for drinks and tips, and bring a layer: the decks are windy even on summer evenings.

Safety. There has been no major tour-boat disaster on the Bosphorus in recent years. There have been two tour-boat fires without injuries and a charter yacht that sank at its pier after the passengers got off. Boats carry life jackets; ask about the safety briefing.

When you are unsure which season or time of day suits you, the best time guide goes month by month.

Bosphorus cruise FAQ

How much is a Bosphorus cruise?

From 200 TL online for Dentur's 75-minute loop and 340 TL for foreign visitors on the Şehir Hatları Short Tour. Platform sightseeing boats start from about $6–13, shared sunset yachts from about $17, dinner cruises from about $20–45, and private yachts about $140–360 per boat for 2 hours.

Which Bosphorus cruise is the best?

For the view alone, a public loop or a two-hour sightseeing boat. For the whole strait, the Şehir Hatları Long Tour. For a sunset in a small group, a 16–30-person yacht. For an evening out, a dinner cruise. The highest-rated large listings score 4.7–4.9 on GetYourGuide.

How long is a Bosphorus cruise?

Dentur's loop is about 75 minutes, Turyol's about 90 minutes, and most platform cruises 2–2.5 hours. Dinner cruises take 3–3.5 hours, and the public Long Tour about 6 hours including 2.5 hours ashore.

Where do Bosphorus cruises leave from?

Mostly Eminönü and Kabataş, plus Karaköy for some dinner ships and yachts, and Beşiktaş and Üsküdar for the Dentur loop. Each pier has several separate landings, so check the exact boarding point on your voucher.

Does a Bosphorus cruise go to the Black Sea?

Not in two hours. Most loops turn at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridge. Only the public Long Tour and the 4.5–9-hour lunch cruises reach the mouth of the strait at Anadolu Kavağı or Poyrazköy.

Can I use İstanbulkart on a Bosphorus cruise?

Plan on buying a ticket at the booth. İstanbulkart works on the regular commuter ferries, which make a cheap do-it-yourself cruise; the Şehir Hatları, Dentur and Turyol tours sell their own tickets, and whether they also take İstanbulkart is not confirmed.

Is a sunset or a day cruise better?

Sunset gives the light and the lit bridges, but the timing changes through the year: board about 75–90 minutes before sunset. Day cruises are better for photos of the palaces and are less crowded in the morning.
