A Bosphorus night cruise is the cheapest way to see Istanbul's bridges and waterfront lit up: two hours on the water, no set menu, no belly dancer, no shared table with strangers. You pay about $11 instead of the $20–80 of a dinner cruise, and you spend the whole time looking outside.

The catch is the calendar. Istanbul stays on UTC+3 all year, so in June the sky is still light at 21:00, while in December it is dark before 18:10. A "night cruise" in midsummer is mostly a sunset cruise with a dark ending. This page covers when it is really dark, which listings are true night cruises and which are dinner cruises in disguise, and the public boats that sail after dark for a ferry fare.

Night cruise or dinner cruise: what is on sale

Three kinds of evening boats share the word "night", and two of them are not what this page is about.

True night cruises, no dinner. Bosphorus Night Cruise Past Illuminated Landmarks on GetYourGuide is the clean product: 2 hours after dark with a guide, from about $11, rated 4.7 from about 300 reviews. Several day cruises also sell a night departure as an option: the big Day/Sunset/Night Sightseeing Cruise, the Small-Group Day/Sunset/Night Cruise and the Guided Day & Night Boat Cruise, all around $9–12. Choose the night slot when you book.

Night cruises with extras. The Afternoon, Sunset or Night Cruise with Transfers, rated 4.9, costs about $42 because hotel pick-up is included. A Romantic Night Yacht Cruise at about $53 adds drinks and food on a smaller boat, but it has only a handful of reviews so far.

Dinner cruises with "night" in the name. "Istanbul by Night: Dinner Cruise & Drinks" on GetYourGuide is a 4-hour dinner cruise with a set meal, whirling dervishes and a DJ. Headout's "Istanbul Evening Bosphorus Dinner Cruise with Turkish Shows" is a dinner cruise too. Nothing wrong with them, but if you want a dinner show, compare all of them on our dinner cruise page and the Turkish night show guide.

When is it dark? Night cruise times by month

Sunset in Istanbul runs from 17:37 in early December to 20:42 in late June. The blue hour after it lasts only 26–32 minutes; that is when the bridge lights come on against a still-blue sky, the best half-hour for photos. After that it is full night.

Istanbul time (UTC+3 all year). Sunset cruises usually leave 60–90 minutes before sunset so the sun goes down mid-cruise; dinner cruises leave after dark.

Date Sunset Fully dark (end of twilight) A 19:00 boat sails in…
15 January 18:02 18:30 full darkness
15 April 19:45 20:12 sunset, blue hour, then night
15 June 20:39 21:11 daylight, sunset near the end
15 October 18:25 18:52 full darkness
7 December 17:37 18:06 full darkness

The rule of thumb: from mid-October to mid-February a 19:00–21:00 cruise is entirely after dark. From May to August, book the latest departure on offer or accept that the first hour is daylight. In April and September a 19:00 boat gives you sunset, blue hour and night in one trip, which is arguably the best of all.

The night cruises compared

Night cruises without dinner

1

The clean night cruise

Two hours after dark, guided, around $11 and rated 4.7. No dinner and no show, which is the point.

2

Biggest boat, most reviews

A big shared boat sold as a "mega yacht", with an app audio guide, soft drinks, tea and snacks; the listing copy points to the Mega Lüfer boats from Kabataş. Pick the night option.

3

Smaller group, same price class

A small-group day, sunset or night cruise with an app guide and snacks, about $12, rated 4.8 from almost 500 reviews.

4

Night cruise with hotel pick-up

Rated 4.9; the price includes transfers from central European-side hotels, so you skip the tram ride at night.

What separates them is mostly the boat. The $9–12 night cruises use big shared boats with an indoor saloon and an open upper deck; the upper deck fills first, so board early. "Audio guide" on these listings means an app on your phone, so bring headphones. The guide on the 986343 listing is part of the product, which helps at night when you cannot read the shore for yourself.

Pick-up, where included, covers central hotels on the European side only (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beyoğlu, Sirkeci, Karaköy and similar). No listing covers hotels in Kadıköy, Üsküdar or near the airports. Be in the lobby 10–15 minutes early; a pick-up round can take an hour.

Headout's sightseeing cruise in this comparison cannot be cancelled or rescheduled. For an evening that depends on the wind, the GetYourGuide version with free cancellation up to 24 hours before (and reserve now, pay later) is the safer choice even at a dollar or two more.

Against a dinner cruise the maths is simple. The standard dinner cruise with a Turkish night show costs about $20–45 on the platforms, and Turyol sells its own dinner ship at 50 USD, or 80 USD with unlimited local drinks. A night cruise at about $11 plus a meal ashore usually costs less and gives you more of the strait.

Night boats on public ferries

You can see the lit strait for a ferry fare, as long as you know which boats run after dark.

Dentur Avrasya's Bosphorus tour. A non-stop 75-minute loop from Kabataş up the European shore to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and back along the Asian shore, with announcements in Turkish and English. The last departures are 19:40 from Kabataş and 19:30 from Üsküdar. From October to mid-March that last boat sails in the dark. It costs 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online, children up to 10 ride free, and cards are accepted. Times change with the season, so check denturavrasya.com.

Turyol from Eminönü. Roughly hourly into the evening from the Turyol pier on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge, about 90 minutes to the second bridge, about 300 TL at the booth.

The Moonlight Tour (Mehtap Gezisi). The only public night tour of Şehir Hatları, the city ferry company. It runs only on Saturdays in the summer timetable (late June to early September): Eminönü 18:25, up the whole strait to Anadolu Kavağı at 20:05, a 2.5-hour stop in the dark, back at 22:30 and into Eminönü at 00:10. The return fare is 730 TL for foreign visitors and 365 TL for Turkish citizens. It is not running in the winter timetable. Fun on a warm night, but you spend more time ashore at a fishing village than on the water, and you get back after midnight.

Cross-strait commuter ferries. The cheapest night view of all: a Kabataş–Üsküdar ferry costs 51.81 TL with an İstanbulkart, the city transport card, with the lit Old City skyline to one side and the first bridge in the distance. Between 00:30 and 05:30 fares are doubled. In summer some lines (Kadıköy–Karaköy–Beşiktaş) run late on Friday and Saturday nights. A contactless bank card at the turnstile works too, but costs 120 TL per ferry. Our public ferry guide has every line and fare.

What you see on the water at night

A 2-hour night cruise follows the standard loop: up the European shore, a quick crossing at or near the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, and back down the Asian side.

  • Dolmabahçe Palace and Çırağan, the second now a Kempinski hotel, lit along the European waterfront.
  • Ortaköy Mosque framed by the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the first bridge, which every cruise passes under. Its old name, Bosphorus Bridge, is still used on many audio guides.
  • Rumeli Hisarı, the fortress built in 1452, below the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, the usual turning point.
  • On the way back: Beylerbeyi Palace under the first bridge on the Asian side, then the lights of Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower off Salacak.

Night photos from a moving boat are hard. Brace the phone against a rail, turn off the flash, and use the blue hour rather than full darkness if you want the sky in the picture. Drones are not allowed on board. For the full list of sights in order, see what you see from the water.

Practical tips for a night cruise

Dress for the deck, not the city. Evenings on the open water are colder than in the streets. From November to March daytime highs are only about 10–16 °C, and the wind on deck makes it feel colder; operators themselves advise a jacket or a shawl. Boats have indoor saloons, but the view is outside.

Drinks. Most shared night boats serve tea, coffee and soft drinks; alcohol is sold on some boats and banned on others. Bringing your own is not allowed. Smoking is banned in the indoor areas.

Weather. A strong lodos, the south-westerly wind that peaks in December, cancels exposed ferry lines on bad days, and operators may change the route or cancel. The operator or captain decides; the platform then rebooks or refunds under its terms. Fog is usually a morning event and rarely affects an evening cruise.

Combine it. A late-afternoon sunset cruise followed by dinner ashore covers the same water with daylight thrown in. From Kabataş, the night boats are a short walk from the T1 tram and the F1 funicular; see the Kabataş pier guide. If you want to splash out, a private yacht at night is priced per boat, from about $140 for a short charter.

Dentur's public 75-minute loop also sails after dark on its last departures from October to mid-March.

What time does it get dark for a Bosphorus night cruise?

Full darkness comes about 30 minutes after sunset: around 18:50 in mid-October, 18:06 in early December and after 21:00 in June. From mid-October to mid-February any cruise leaving at 19:00 or later is entirely after dark.

How much is a night cruise on the Bosphorus?

About $11 for a 2-hour night cruise without dinner, about $42 with hotel pick-up, and $20–80 for a dinner cruise with a Turkish night show. Dentur's public loop costs 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online.

Does the public ferry run a Bosphorus night tour?
