Bosphorus sightseeing cruise: public loops, $6 tour boats and which one to take

A Bosphorus sightseeing cruise goes up the European shore to the second bridge and back down the Asian side in 75 minutes to 2 hours. The public boats cost 200–340 TL at the pier; the platform boats from $6 add an app audio guide and online booking.

The Bosphorus sightseeing cruise is the trip almost every visitor to Istanbul takes, and the cheapest good one costs 200 TL. It is a boat that leaves the Old City waterfront, runs north past the Ottoman palaces and the wooden waterside mansions, turns near the second bridge and comes back down the Asian shore. What changes between products is the boat, the commentary and the price.

This page compares the public loops with the platform cruises, explains which pier each one uses, and says when the cheapest ticket is also the best one.

What a "Bosphorus sightseeing cruise" really is

Three different products share the name:

  1. The public tour. Şehir Hatları, the city's ferry company, runs the Short Tour (Kısa Boğaz Turu) from Eminönü at 14:40 with pick-ups at Üsküdar 14:55 and Ortaköy 15:10. After Ortaköy it sails up the strait without stops and returns, about 2 hours in all. Foreign visitors pay 340 TL, Turkish citizens 170 TL, children under 12 pay 85 TL and under-7s ride free. There is no commentary and tickets are sold only at the booth.
  2. The hourly loops of the private ferry companies. Dentur Avrasya runs a non-stop 75-minute loop from Kabataş, Beşiktaş and Üsküdar with announcements in Turkish and English. Turyol, a co-operative of boat owners, runs a loop of about 90 minutes roughly every hour from its own pier at Eminönü.
  3. The platform cruises on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets: big shared tour boats, often sold as "mega yachts", with an audio guide app, tea or soft drinks, and online booking with free cancellation on most listings. Prices start from about $6.

The platform boats and the hourly loops look much alike from the shore. In fact Tiqets sells a QR ticket for Turyol's hourly boat at Eminönü, and the cheapest GetYourGuide cruise boards at the same Turyol pier. The difference is mostly in what comes with the seat.

The route: what you see and where to sit

The standard loop, as Dentur publishes it, goes up the European shore: the Old City peninsula and Topkapı, Eminönü and the Galata Bridge, Galataport, Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace (now a hotel), the Ortaköy Mosque, then under the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, past Arnavutköy and Bebek Bay to Rumeli Hisarı, the fortress built in 1452 at the narrowest point of the strait. It turns at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and comes back along the Asian shore: Anadolu Hisarı, Küçüksu Pavilion, Kandilli, Vaniköy, the twin-towered Kuleli military school, Çengelköy, Beylerbeyi Palace, Kuzguncuk and finally the Maiden's Tower off Üsküdar.

Some platform boats turn at Rumeli Hisarı without going under the second bridge, and the Maiden's Tower is often seen only from a distance. If Rumeli Hisarı and the second bridge matter to you, pick a loop that names them.

Sit on the left going north. That puts the European palaces on your side on the way up. On the way back the Asian shore is on your left and the European skyline, with the sunset in the evening, is across the water on your right. Morning light falls on the front of Dolmabahçe and Çırağan; afternoon light falls on Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu. The landmarks guide names everything you pass, in order.

The public and hourly boats: Şehir Hatları, Dentur and Turyol

Dentur Avrasya is the best value on the strait for a sightseeing loop with commentary. The boat leaves Kabataş at 10:30, 12:40 and then hourly to 19:40, Beşiktaş from 10:40 to 17:55, and Üsküdar hourly from 12:30 to 19:30, with extra sailings possible at weekends. At Kabataş and Üsküdar the fare set on 14 August 2026 is 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online; Beşiktaş charges 250 TL at the booth. Children up to 10 ride free, and the booths take cards. There are no stops on the way: it is a closed loop, not a hop-on hop-off service. Times and online tickets are on denturavrasya.com.

Turyol leaves from its pier on the Golden Horn side of the Galata Bridge at Eminönü, opposite the Spice Bazaar and next to the fish-sandwich boats, roughly every hour from about 10:00 into the evening. The loop takes about 90 minutes and goes to about the second bridge. Turyol does not publish a price; expect about 300 TL at the booth. Its route and piers are listed on turyol.com. More on the company in our Turyol review.

Şehir Hatları runs the Short Tour once a day in winter, from Eminönü at 14:40 (an extra 16:45 sailing on public holidays). The booth is east of the Galata Bridge. The times shown are the winter timetable; check sehirhatlari.istanbul or the booth on the day.

Galataport's boat is the odd one out: every 30 minutes from 13:30 to 20:30, about 70 minutes, 700 TL with one ice cream, background music and no commentary. Its route stays in the lower strait (Eminönü, Maiden's Tower, Üsküdar, Beylerbeyi, Ortaköy, Beşiktaş) and does not reach the second bridge. Details are on Galataport's site.

All public fares, plus the Long Tour to the Black Sea mouth, are in the public ferry guide.

Platform sightseeing cruises compared

The big sellers on the platforms are all shared tour boats, priced from about $6 to $13. Under that price "yacht" means a large boat with an indoor saloon, toilets and a tea counter. The "audio guide" is an app on your own phone, so bring headphones and charge the battery.

Three more things worth knowing. The cheapest GetYourGuide cruise (195194, from about $6) is a ticket for the hourly boats at Turyol's Eminönü pier, about 90 minutes with an app guide; its "take the 4 PM or 5 PM boat for sunset" advice only works in autumn and winter. GetYourGuide 603461 lets you start from Üsküdar on the Asian side as well as Kabataş. And Tiqets' "Eminönü ferry station" cruise is the Turyol boat, not Şehir Hatları, rated 3.2 from 45 reviews; you can find it in Tiqets' Istanbul listing.

The operator behind each boat is reviewed separately: Sea Land Travel, Dentur Avrasya and the Mega Lüfer boats.

Paymentlira; Dentur takes cards, other booths prefer cashcard online in USD or EUR

My recommendation: if you are staying near Kabataş or Beşiktaş and do not need to book ahead, take the Dentur loop. It is a proper ferry with commentary, it reaches the second bridge, and it costs 200 TL if you buy online. If you want a specific slot such as sunset, a commentary in your own language, or the security of a booking with free cancellation, a platform boat at $6–13 is fair value. The extra money buys convenience, not a better view.

Which pier: Eminönü, Kabataş or Üsküdar

Eminönü has three boarding points and that confuses everyone. The Şehir Hatları tour booth is east of the Galata Bridge; Turyol's pier, where the hourly boats and the cheapest platform tickets board, is on the Golden Horn side about 320 m west; agency boats such as Sea Land check you in at an office and walk you to the boat. The tram stop is T1 Eminönü, and Marmaray stops at Sirkeci. Details on the Eminönü pier page.

From the Eminönü tram stop to Turyol's tour pier

  1. Get off the T1 tram at Eminönü and walk towards the Galata Bridge.
  2. Stay on the Golden Horn side of the bridge (the side facing the Spice Bazaar), not the Bosphorus side.
  3. Look for the fish-sandwich boats; Turyol's pier and its "Boğaz Turu" booth are next to them.
  4. Buy a ticket at the booth, or show your platform QR code at the turnstile.
  5. Board early if you want an upper-deck seat.

Kabataş is the end of the T1 tram and of the F1 funicular from Taksim. It is a strip of separate landings: the Dentur terminal, Dentur's wooden tour pier, and the private landing by the Kadoil petrol station (Meclis-i Mebusan Cd. 34), which some tickets call "Dolmabahçe Mosque". Most Kabataş platform boats use the petrol-station landing. See the Kabataş pier page.

Üsküdar on the Asian side has the Dentur loop hourly from 12:30 and is on Marmaray and the M5 metro. It suits anyone staying in Kadıköy or Üsküdar, which hotel pick-ups never cover. More on the Üsküdar pier page.

The exact boarding point of a platform cruise is often only in the voucher or sent by WhatsApp. Read it the evening before.

Day, sunset or night slot

Daytime gives the best photos of the palaces and the calmest decks if you board between 10:00 and 13:00; in summer the boats fill up after 15:00.

Sunset is the most popular slot, but only if the timing is right. Board about 75–90 minutes before sunset: around 17:00 in mid-October, 16:15 in December, 19:00 in May and August. Istanbul does not change its clocks, so a fixed "5 PM sunset" boat in July comes back about two hours before the sun goes down. The sunset cruise guide has the timing month by month.

Night loops sail under the lit bridges; the lights come on in the half hour after sunset. From October to March even a 19:00 departure is in full darkness. See the night cruise page.

Tips for the boat

  • Upper deck first. The open deck fills quickly. Arrive 20 minutes before departure if you want a seat outside.
  • Headphones. Every app audio guide runs on your own phone.
  • A warm layer. Operators themselves warn that the deck is windy, even on summer evenings.
  • No alcohol of your own. The shared sightseeing boats ban it.
  • Some lira. Pier booths prefer cash, although Dentur takes cards; drinks beyond what is included and tips are extra.
  • Accessibility. Most shared boats are not wheelchair accessible; check the listing. Tiqets marks its Turyol-boat ticket as wheelchair accessible.
  • Drones are not allowed on board.

Touts, weather and cancellations

Weather. The boats sail in rain, but the lodos (a strong south-westerly wind) cancels ferry lines several times each winter, and fog is usually a morning problem. The operator or captain decides; the platforms then rebook or refund under their terms. GetYourGuide cancels free up to 24 hours before on most listings, and Tiqets' Sea Land listing does too. Headout's main sightseeing cruise does not cancel at all.

Safety. There has been no major tour-boat disaster on the Bosphorus in recent years; the boats carry life jackets, and it is fine to ask about the safety briefing.

If you are still deciding between a sightseeing boat, a yacht and a dinner cruise, the cruise overview compares every type and the how-to-choose guide works through it by budget and group.

Bosphorus sightseeing cruise FAQ

How much is a Bosphorus sightseeing cruise?

Dentur's 75-minute loop costs 200 TL online or 250 TL at the booth, Turyol's about 300 TL, and the Şehir Hatları Short Tour 340 TL for foreign visitors (170 TL for Turkish citizens). Platform cruises with an audio guide start from about $6–13.

How long is the Bosphorus sightseeing cruise?

About 75 minutes on Dentur, about 90 minutes on Turyol, and about 2 hours on the Şehir Hatları Short Tour and most platform cruises. Galataport's boat takes about 70 minutes but stays in the lower strait.

Where does the Bosphorus sightseeing cruise leave from?

Eminönü (Turyol pier on the Golden Horn side, the Şehir Hatları booth east of the bridge) and Kabataş for most platform boats; Dentur also leaves from Beşiktaş and Üsküdar. Check the exact landing on your voucher.

Is the audio guide a real guide?

No. On almost every cheap cruise the audio guide is an app on your phone, so bring headphones. Dentur's boats make announcements in Turkish and English. A live guide comes only on pricier yacht listings.

Which side of the boat should I sit on?

The left side going north, which puts the European palaces next to you. Coming back, the Asian shore is on your left and the European side, where the sun sets, is across the water on your right.

Can I just buy a ticket at the pier?

Yes for the public and hourly boats: Dentur, Turyol and Şehir Hatları all sell at their booths, and Dentur also online. Buy only at a booth that shows the operator's name.
