A Bosphorus sunset cruise is a two-hour loop up the strait timed so the sun goes down while you are on the water. Done right, you see the Asian shore lit gold on the way up, the European skyline turn black against an orange sky on the way back, and the bridge lights come on in the half-hour of blue that follows. Done wrong, you sail at 17:00 in July and get home three hours before the sun sets.
The timing matters more than the boat. Istanbul stays on UTC+3 all year, so sunset swings from 17:37 in early December to 20:42 in late June, and a fixed "sunset" slot only works in some months. This page tells you when to board for each season, which side of the deck to claim, what the different sunset boats really are, and which platform sells them for less today.
Three different things are sold under the same name, and the price tells you which one you are looking at.
Big shared boats with a "sunset option" ($6–13). These are the same tour boats that run sightseeing loops all day, with indoor saloons, an open upper deck and an audio guide on your phone. The cheapest, GetYourGuide 195194 at about $6, is a ticket for the hourly boat from the Turyol pier at Eminönü; the listing tells you to take the 16:00 or 17:00 sailing for sunset, which only works from late autumn to winter. The Day/Sunset/Night cruise at about $9 is sold as a "mega yacht", and its listing copy points to the big Mega Lüfer boats from Kabataş. Good value, but not a yacht and not a small group.
Shared sunset yachts ($17–75). Smaller boats that leave once in the late afternoon, take 16 to about 40 guests, and serve tea, coffee, soft drinks and a plate of snacks: baklava, cookies, fruit, nuts or small pastries depending on the operator. There is no meal on any of them. Alcohol is sold at a bar or not available at all, except on the few listings that name wine in the title.
The public boats, timed by you (200–300 TL). Dentur Avrasya's 75-minute loop from Kabataş and Turyol's roughly hourly boat from Eminönü run into the evening. Pick the departure that lands on sunset and you get the same view for a fraction of the price, without snacks or a guide.
"Yacht" for 40 people
Under Turkish rules a commercial yacht may carry at most 36 passengers. A boat sold as a yacht for 40 or more is a tour boat styled as one. That is not a problem in itself, but it tells you what kind of crowd to expect on deck.
The best sunset cruise is on the water from golden hour, the last 45–60 minutes before the sun touches the hills, through blue hour, which in Istanbul lasts only about 26–32 minutes after sunset. That means boarding roughly 75–90 minutes before sunset.
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Sunset cruise departs | Dark by |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 18:01 | 16:31–17:01 | 18:26 |
| February | 18:39 | 17:09–17:39 | 19:04 |
| March | 19:12 | 17:42–18:12 | 19:37 |
| April | 19:45 | 18:15–18:45 | 20:10 |
| May | 20:16 | 18:46–19:16 | 20:41 |
| June | 20:38 | 19:08–19:38 | 21:03 |
| July | 20:35 | 19:05–19:35 | 21:00 |
| August | 20:02 | 18:32–19:02 | 20:27 |
| September | 19:12 | 17:42–18:12 | 19:37 |
| October | 18:23 | 16:53–17:23 | 18:48 |
| November | 17:45 | 16:15–16:45 | 18:10 |
| December | 17:37 | 16:07–16:37 | 18:02 |
Istanbul time (UTC+3 all year). Sunset cruises usually leave 60–90 minutes before sunset so the sun goes down mid-cruise; dinner cruises leave after dark.
| Time of year | Sunset | Ideal boarding |
|---|---|---|
| Early December | 17:37 | about 16:15 |
| Mid-October | 18:25 | about 17:00 |
| Mid-September / mid-March | 19:15 / 19:12 | about 17:45 |
| May / August | about 20:00–20:30 | about 19:00 |
| June / July | about 20:20–20:42 | about 19:15 |
Good operators move the departure with the season. Golden City Tours prints a departure table for its group sunset cruise, for example 19:00 in the first half of July and 15:45 in the first half of December. Velena Travel leaves about one hour before the official sunset. Others keep one fixed slot all year, and that is where the trouble starts.
"Sunset" slots that miss the sunset
A 16:00 or 17:00 boat catches the sunset only from about late October to February. In July the same 17:00 sailing is back at the pier around 19:00, well before the 20:37 sunset. A fixed 18:00–20:00 "sunset" tour ends before sunset from April to September. Before you pay, compare the departure time on the listing with the sunset time for your date.
A practical note for families: from May to August a well-timed sunset cruise returns after 21:00. With small children, an autumn or winter sunset at 17:30–18:30 is far easier.

Istanbul: Bosphorus Sunset Yacht Cruise with Snacks
4.6 (118)from $29
The sun always sets on the European side of the strait. Most boats go up along the European shore and come back along the Asian shore, so the rule is simple: sit on the left (port) side going north, on the right (starboard) side coming back.
On the way up, the left side gives you the European palaces and Ortaköy Mosque, while the Asian shore on your right, with Beylerbeyi Palace, Kuleli and Anadolu Hisarı, is the side lit gold by the low sun. On a boat that leaves about 90 minutes before sunset, the sunset itself usually falls on the return leg, with the whole width of the strait between you and the European skyline in silhouette on your right.
Where exactly the sun drops depends on the month:
The open upper deck fills first. Board early if the side matters to you, and on the small yachts ask the crew which way the boat will turn. See the landmarks in order if you want to know what you are looking at on each shore.
Most shared sunset yachts look the same in the photos. What separates them is group size, whether the guide is a person or an app, where the boat turns, and the pier.

Golden City Tours publishes the route on its own site: Kabataş, Dolmabahçe, Çırağan, Ortaköy, under the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, Bebek, Rumeli Hisarı, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, then back past Anadolu Hisarı, Beylerbeyi, Üsküdar, the Maiden's Tower and the Old City skyline to Galataport and Kabataş. Snacks are baklava, cookies, nuts, seasonal fruit, Turkish tea and homemade lemonade; drinks with alcohol come from the bar. The direct price is €50 for adults and €45 for children aged 4–17. The from-price on GetYourGuide is much lower, and the listing runs "2–6 hours", so check which option that price belongs to before you assume the cheapest one is the sunset cruise.
Stambultour is the genuine small group. Reviewers praise a crew who help with photos and hand out blankets on cold evenings; the one recurring complaint is an audio-guide app that buffered. Bring your own headphones. The boat is not suitable for people with limited mobility.
The Efe Yat listing is the budget yacht. We found no company website or licence number, so everything beyond the listing is unconfirmed. Its description promises "a grazing plate", but the detailed inclusions say light snacks, cookies and fruit; do not expect a cheese board. Reviewers mention wet seats after rain.
GetYourGuide's Originals sunset yacht at about $56 is the priciest of the big sellers, 2.5 hours, rated 4.8. GetYourGuide designs the product; a local licensed operator, named on the booking page, runs the boat.
Wine is not included on the leading sunset yachts. If a glass at sunset is the point, book a listing that names it: Sunset Cruise with Snacks and Wine (about $29, rated 4.8 from a small base of 131 reviews) or the Small Group Yacht Tour with Unlimited Wine (about $45). Bringing your own alcohol is not allowed on shared boats. For a private boat with your own bottle and your own route, see private yacht charters; for a ring and a sunset, see proposals on a yacht.

Two things the price check does not show. First, Headout's big yacht cruise (its best-selling Istanbul cruise) cannot be cancelled or rescheduled; at a few dollars cheaper, that is a poor trade for a weather-dependent evening. Second, Velena's sunset yacht costs €45 on Tiqets and €60 on Velena's own site; the direct price includes hotel pick-up, the Tiqets one does not.
One product really is identical on all three platforms: the Bosphorus and Golden Horn sunset yacht with an English-speaking guide, sold by Travelpedia, an agency from Eskişehir. It costs €49 everywhere, so choose by cancellation terms and reviews.

That cruise starts at 17:30 from Kabataş and ends at Karaköy pier, not where it began. Fine if you plan dinner in Karaköy; annoying if your bag is in a hotel by Kabataş. Like most "Golden Horn" cruises, it only dips into the mouth of the Horn; for the whole Horn see the Golden Horn page.
On GetYourGuide most sunset listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before and let you reserve now and pay later, which is useful when the forecast is uncertain. Tiqets sets cancellation per product (24 hours on both sunset yachts above).
The pier is often printed only on the final voucher, and three of them look nothing like the others.
Arrive 15–20 minutes early. Velena asks for 15 minutes on its sunset cruise, and boats do not wait at a busy landing.

In summer the same cruise starts around 19:15 and the blue hour ends after 21:00. In December it starts around 16:15.
If you do not need snacks or a guide, the public tour boats give you the same water for a fraction of the price. Fares are in Turkish lira at the booth.
Dentur Avrasya from Kabataş, Beşiktaş or Üsküdar. A non-stop loop of about 75 minutes up the European shore to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and back down the Asian shore, with announcements in Turkish and English. It costs 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online, children up to 10 ride free, and cards are accepted. From Kabataş it leaves hourly through the afternoon, with the last boat at 19:40. In mid-October the 17:40 sailing is back around 18:55: golden hour, sunset and blue hour at a public-boat fare. In December pick the 16:40. Turyol from Eminönü. A roughly hourly boat of about 90 minutes to the second bridge and back, about 300 TL at the booth (Turyol does not publish prices). The GetYourGuide ticket above is a seat on this kind of boat.
The Şehir Hatları Short Tour does not work for sunset. It leaves Eminönü at 14:40 and takes about two hours, so it is back before sunset even in December. More on all of them in our public ferry guide.
Sunset without a boat. The locals' sunset spot is the shore at Salacak in Üsküdar, facing the Maiden's Tower with the Old City behind it, and it is free. Take a ferry to Üsküdar in the late afternoon (Kabataş–Üsküdar costs 51.81 TL with an İstanbulkart), sit on the steps with a tea, and ride back after dark. More ideas for the Asian side.
Autumn is the sweet spot. In September and October the sunset falls at a normal hour (19:38 on 1 September, 18:01 on 1 November), the evenings are mild and the sea is still warm. Spring brings the Judas trees in bloom on both shores, roughly mid-April to mid-May. Summer sunsets are late and the decks are hot at the start. Winter sunsets come early, around 17:40, and daytime highs are about 10 °C, so the open deck at blue hour is cold. See the best time to cruise for the month-by-month picture.
Bring a layer in every season; operators themselves warn about wind on deck. The lodos, a strong south-westerly wind that peaks in December, cancels exposed ferry lines on bad days. The captain or operator decides whether a boat sails; if a sunset yacht is cancelled for weather, the platform rebooks or refunds under its own terms. Fog is mostly a morning event and rarely touches an evening cruise.
Most sunset yachts are not suitable for wheelchairs: Tiqets marks its yacht products as not accessible, and the Efe Yat listing does not take non-folding or electric wheelchairs. If you need step-free boarding, ask the operator before booking.
If the sunset is the warm-up and you want the lights afterwards, a night cruise runs after dark without the dinner-show price, and the dinner cruises board from about 20:00, in daylight only between May and early August.
It depends on the month. Good operators board 75–90 minutes before sunset: about 16:15 in December, 17:00 in mid-October, 17:45 in mid-September and mid-March, 19:00 in May and August, 19:15 in June and July. Check the departure time on your listing against the sunset for your date.
Shared sunset yachts sell from about $17 to $75 per person, most between $20 and $56. Big shared tour boats with a sunset departure cost $6–13. Dentur's public 75-minute loop costs 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online if you pick the right departure.
Sit on the left (port) side going north and on the right (starboard) side coming back. The sun always sets over the European shore, and on most routes the sunset falls on the return leg.
Not on most. The leading sunset yachts serve tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks and sell alcohol at a bar, or not at all. Book a listing with wine in the title if you want it included. Bringing your own alcohol is not allowed on shared boats.
No. Shared sunset yachts serve snacks such as baklava, cookies, fruit and nuts. For a meal, book a dinner cruise, which boards around 20:00 to 20:45.
The operator or captain decides whether the boat sails, usually because of strong wind. The platform then rebooks you or refunds you under its cancellation terms. Avoid non-refundable listings for a weather-dependent evening.
