Bosphorus tours: cruise plus city, bus, palace and two-continents days

A Bosphorus tour is a boat ride packaged with something on land: a bus, a palace, the Old City or the Asian hills. The boat is usually the cheapest part; what you pay for is the bus, the guide, the tickets and the lunch, so check which of those are really included.

Most Bosphorus tours are not cruises with a bit of sightseeing. They are city tours with a cruise attached. The boat part is often the same 90-minute or 2-hour sightseeing boat you could buy at the pier for a few hundred lira. The value, when there is value, comes from the land half: a bus up to the Asian hills, a palace ticket you didn't have to queue for, a guide, lunch, the cable car at Pierre Loti.

This guide sorts the combos into the five kinds you will meet on GetYourGuide, Headout and Tiqets, says which boat each one really puts you on, and points out the traps that cost the most: closed palaces on Mondays and Tuesdays, entry fees left out of the price, and combos that cannot be cancelled. If you only want to be on the water, skip the combos and read the sightseeing cruise guide instead.

What a Bosphorus tour actually sells

Five kinds of product share the "Bosphorus tour" label:

Kind Typical length What the land half is From (live listings)
Two-continents bus + boat day 9–12 h Çamlıca Hill, Beylerbeyi Palace, Pierre Loti, lunch about $56–111
Hop-on hop-off bus + boat 24–48 h bus pass Open-top bus loop, one cruise about $73–97
Old City day + cruise 9–12 h Guided walk in Sultanahmet, lunch about $54 and up
Palace or monument ticket + cruise half a day Dolmabahçe, Topkapı, Galata Tower, Basilica Cistern varies, check the box
Half-day cruise + cable car about 4–5 h Bus to the Golden Horn, cable car at Pierre Loti about $44–67

A sixth family, the food tours that cross to Kadıköy on a public ferry, is a walk with a short boat ride; they have their own page, food tours with a ferry. Day trips to the Princes' Islands are not on the Bosphorus at all (the islands are in the Sea of Marmara) and are covered under Princes' Islands tours.

Two words in listing titles need translating. "Skip-the-line" at a palace means you skip the ticket desk, not the security check or the audio-guide counter; National Palaces' own rules say a reservation gives no priority at the desk. "Bosphorus cruise" inside a combo means a shared sightseeing boat, usually with an audio guide that plays on your own phone, not a yacht.

Two-continents tours by bus and boat: itinerary and price

The "Europe and Asia" day is the most common Bosphorus tour. The platforms describe nearly the same running order:

A typical two-continents day
  1. Hotel pick-up, often from several hotels in turnCentral European-side hotels only

  2. Drive across to the Asian side: Çamlıca Hill and the Grand Çamlıca MosqueThe mosque is free; the tower next door is not part of most tours

  3. Beylerbeyi Palace on the Asian shoreEntry is included on some listings, not all

  4. LunchDrinks at lunch are often extra

  5. Golden Horn: Pierre Loti Hill and the cable car, usually one way down to EyüpThe cable car stops in strong wind

  6. Two-hour Bosphorus cruise with tea or coffeeShared tour boat, not a yacht

  7. Drop-off at the hotel

What changes between listings is what is inside the price. GetYourGuide 434024 is the cheap one at around $56 for nine hours with the Golden Horn, the cable car and the cruise, rated 4.7 from 47 reviews; lunch is not in its summary, so check the option you pick. 498082 runs 12 hours with Beylerbeyi, the Çamlıca mosque, lunch, the cable car and the cruise, at about $107 with 4.8 from 80 reviews. 700768 is the one with real volume: 326 reviews at 4.7, hotel transfers, lunch, Beylerbeyi entry and a 2-hour boat, about $111.

On Tiqets, the SeaLand Trip version (1097291) starts at 09:00, lasts 10 hours and lists hotel pick-up and drop-off, Beylerbeyi entry, the cable car, lunch with a soft drink, a licensed guide (Arabic, English, French, Russian or Spanish) and a 2-hour cruise. It had no reviews when we checked. The same itinerary name sells at three clearly different price levels across the platforms, which tells you these are different suppliers, not one tour at three prices.

Our view: the bus earns its money on this kind of day. Çamlıca Hill and Beylerbeyi are awkward to reach by public transport from the old town, and the tour strings them together with the Golden Horn in one drive. Book 700768 if you want the reviewed option with everything in, or 434024 if price matters and you are happy to sort out your own lunch. Avoid booking any of them for a Monday: Beylerbeyi is closed, and the tour will swap in something else.

The cheaper half-day relative is Velena Travel's 5-hour cruise, bus and cable car from Taksim Square at 11:30: a boat with live English commentary and a stop at Küçüksu Pavilion or Rumeli Hisarı depending on the weekday, a bus loop through Sultanahmet, then free time at Pierre Loti and the cable car down. Lunch and hotel transfers are not included, and it has only two reviews. The stops depend on the day, so check your itinerary before you book. More about the company behind it in our Bosphorus Tours (Velena Travel) review.

Hop-on hop-off bus with a Bosphorus cruise

The bus-and-boat ticket gives you an open-top bus for 24 hours (or 48 hours on the two-route versions) plus one Bosphorus cruise. The cruise is a separate boat at fixed times, usually 90 minutes; you get from the bus stop to the pier yourself, and the pier is on the voucher.

GetYourGuide's 414769 is the review leader, at 4.1 from 1,131 reviews and about $73 for a day. Tiqets sells a 24-hour bus and boat ticket from Sultanahmet Square for the same money (1098279, supplier Cosmic Tickets), with a 90-minute cruise and an app audio guide; bring your own headphones. Headout's two-day, two-route ticket with a 1 h 45 cruise had no reviews when we checked.

The bus crosses to Asia only once, over the 15 July Martyrs Bridge to Beylerbeyi, and a full loop can take 2.5–3 hours or more in traffic. It is a sightseeing ride, not transport. If you have used the tram and the ferries before, you can cover the same waterfront for the price of an İstanbulkart fare. The full comparison, including the bus-only passes and the Golden Horn bus that has no boat at all, is on the hop-on hop-off cruise page.

Full-day Old City tours with a cruise and lunch

The "Istanbul in a day" format walks you through Sultanahmet in the morning, feeds you, and puts you on a boat in the afternoon. The biggest seller is Headout's Istanbul in a Day tour (4.5 from 1,129 reviews): an English-speaking guide, lunch, an Old City walk and a 2.5-hour sunset cruise on a glass-enclosed yacht that ends around 19:00, with baklava, fruit and soft drinks.

Read the exclusions. That tour leaves out hotel transfers, tips, shopping and museum entrance fees. The names in its title are not tickets: Topkapı costs 2,750 TL for foreign visitors and the Hagia Sophia upper gallery €25, both paid on the day on top of the tour price. GetYourGuide's 698403 is the budget alternative (about $54 for nine hours with lunch and a cruise, 4.5 from 24 reviews); ask the same question about entry fees before you pay.

Palace and cruise combos: Dolmabahçe, Topkapı, Beylerbeyi

Palace combos sell a ticket and a cruise ticket as one purchase; usually there is no guide, and you visit on your own with the audio guide.

Dolmabahçe. The official foreign ticket is 2,000 TL and covers the state rooms (Selamlık), the Harem and the Painting Museum; there is no separate Harem ticket any more, and it stays valid for 7 days. The audio guide is free with any paid ticket, and phone photos without flash are now allowed inside, but cameras, tripods and strollers are not. The Museum Pass is not valid here. Headout's Dolmabahçe + cruise combo (4.6 from 146 reviews) adds a 90-minute cruise from Kabataş pier, hourly between 12:45 and 15:45, on the Dentur Avrasya boat, with free cancellation up to 24 hours; you need an ID to collect the audio guide, or you leave a €200 deposit. Details on the Dolmabahçe and Bosphorus cruise page.

Topkapı. Topkapı is now run by National Palaces. The foreign ticket is 2,750 TL and already includes the Harem and Hagia Irene, it is valid only on the day you buy it, and the palace is closed on Tuesdays. GetYourGuide's guided Topkapı and Golden Horn cruise combo (193007) has 3.9 from 380 reviews; the Tiqets version (1101284) sits at 2.9. Low ratings on a combo usually mean the land half is rushed. More in Old City and cruise combos.

Beylerbeyi. The Asian-shore palace costs 800 TL (gardens only 100 TL) and is the palace most two-continents tours actually take you into. Every cruise that goes past the first bridge sails right past its waterfront, but no cruise stops there.

Which boat is in your Bosphorus tour or city pass

The listing names rarely tell you, but the meeting points and pass rules do:

  • Istanbul Tourist Pass (€149–299): its cruise is one round trip on the Dentur Avrasya boat from Kabataş, collected at the ticket window with your pass ID. Not hop-on hop-off, no live guide.
  • Istanbul E-pass (€125–245): its cruise is Turyol's hourly boat from its Eminönü pier, to the second bridge and back.
  • Most Headout ticket + cruise combos (Dolmabahçe, Topkapı, Basilica Cistern): the Dentur boat, boarding at the Dentur pier at Kabataş.
  • Two-continents bus days: a 2-hour shared tour boat with tea or coffee; the operator is not named on the listings.
  • Headout's Istanbul in a Day: a glass-enclosed yacht at sunset, 2.5 hours.

That matters because the Dentur and Turyol boats are the cheapest real loops on the strait. Dentur's own Boğaz Turu runs non-stop for about 75 minutes from Kabataş, turns at the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and comes back along the Asian shore, for 250 TL at the booth or 200 TL online (children up to 10 free). Turyol's hourly boat from Eminönü costs about 300 TL at the booth (Turyol does not publish prices). So a pass "includes a Bosphorus cruise" worth a few hundred lira; its value has to come from the museums. More on the Kabataş operator in our Dentur Avrasya review.

The Ministry's MuseumPass İstanbul (€105) is a different thing: no cruise, no Bosphorus palace, no Hagia Sophia. And Headout's "Istanbul Icons" guided-entry product has no cruise at all, even when it sits next to the cruise combos.

Day-of-week traps: Monday, Tuesday and Sunday

Check the weekday before you book any combo with a palace in it:

Day Closed
Monday Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi, Küçüksu, Rumeli Hisarı
Tuesday Topkapı Palace
Wednesday Yıldız Palace (also closed on every public holiday)
Sunday Grand Bazaar

Dolmabahçe makes one exception: it opens on 10 November even when that falls on a Monday. Dolmabahçe and Beylerbeyi also close on New Year's Day and on the first day of each bayram (religious holiday); Topkapı closes only on the first day of Ramazan Bayramı. Opening hours and prices are on the official Dolmabahçe and Topkapı pages of National Palaces. Palace ticket offices sell from 09:00 to 17:00 and take TL in cash or by card.

A Monday "palace + cruise" booking can leave you with only the cruise. On a two-continents day, Monday means no Beylerbeyi. Tuesday rules out Topkapı. A Sunday "Grand Bazaar" stop finds the doors shut.

Bosphorus tour or do it yourself?

For some combos the public boats do the same job for a fraction of the price. For others the tour's bus is worth paying for.

Old City + cruiseTopkapı 2,750 TL, Hagia Sophia €25, Turyol boat from Eminönü about 300 TLGuide and lunch; fees often extra

Our rule of thumb: do Dolmabahçe and the Golden Horn on your own, because the piers and the cable car are easy to reach and the combos add little. Take a tour for the Asian hills, where the bus saves you a long, fiddly day. The public ferries and their fares are explained on the public ferry page; the Asian side on foot is on the Asian side page.

The Pierre Loti cable car (TF2) runs 08:00–22:00 in winter and 08:00–23:00 in summer, takes about three minutes, and costs the standard 46.20 TL İstanbulkart fare; Metro İstanbul's TF2 page has the current status. The Çamlıca Tower terrace is 900 TL for non-citizens on the official booking page; it is enclosed and sold in 1.5-hour slots. Day tours stop at the mosque on a different hill, not at the tower.

Before you pay, check five things in the listing:

  1. Entry fees. "Visit Topkapı" can mean a ticket or a photo stop outside. If fees are excluded, add Topkapı 2,750 TL, Hagia Sophia €25, Dolmabahçe 2,000 TL or Beylerbeyi 800 TL to the price.
  2. Pick-up zone. Pick-ups cover central European-side hotels (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Şişli, Beyoğlu, Sirkeci, Aksaray, Karaköy, Kabataş). None covers Kadıköy, Üsküdar or airport hotels. Pick-ups start around 09:00 and collect from several hotels, so be in the lobby early.
  3. Shopping stops. Some group day tours include a leather or carpet showroom stop. Ask the operator in the booking chat; one published two-continents itinerary lists a leather showroom "if time permits".
  4. Cancellation. GetYourGuide offers free cancellation up to 24 hours on most listings, plus reserve now, pay later. Headout sets it per listing, and several combos are non-refundable. Tiqets sets it per product (Velena's half-day: 12 hours).
  5. Accessibility. None of the Tiqets day tours is marked wheelchair-accessible, and most shared boats are not. Ask before booking.

Carry some TL cash for drinks at lunch, tips and the cable car if it is not included. Bring a layer for the boat: operators warn that the open deck gets windy even on warm days.

Bosphorus tours FAQ

What is the best Bosphorus tour that includes a city tour?

For a full day on both sides, GetYourGuide 700768 has the most reviews (326 at 4.7) and includes hotel transfers, lunch, Beylerbeyi entry and a 2-hour boat. For the lowest price, 434024 covers the Golden Horn, the cable car and the cruise in nine hours for about $56.

Do Bosphorus tours include hotel pick-up?

Many full-day tours do, but only from central European-side hotels (Sultanahmet, Taksim, Beyoğlu, Sirkeci and similar). None covers hotels in Kadıköy, Üsküdar or near the airport. Half-day combos and palace tickets usually have no pick-up at all.

Are museum entrance fees included in Bosphorus combo tours?

Not always. Headout's Istanbul in a Day tour excludes all museum fees, so Topkapı (2,750 TL) and the Hagia Sophia gallery (€25) are extra. Two-continents tours often include Beylerbeyi entry. Read the "includes" list, not the title.

Which cruise is included in the Istanbul Tourist Pass or E-pass?

The Tourist Pass includes one round trip on the Dentur Avrasya boat from Kabataş; the E-pass uses Turyol's hourly boat from Eminönü to the second bridge and back. Both are 75–90-minute public-style tour boats you can also buy at the pier for 200–300 TL.

Can I do a palace and Bosphorus cruise tour on a Monday?

Not with Dolmabahçe or Beylerbeyi, which are closed on Mondays (as are Küçüksu and Rumeli Hisarı). Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays. The cruise still runs, so pick a combo with the Old City or a museum that is open that day.

Is the hop-on hop-off bus with a cruise worth it?

Only if you want the bus anyway. The cruise is one fixed-time 90-minute boat that you reach on your own, and the bus loop takes 2.5–3 hours or more in traffic. The tram plus a Dentur or Turyol loop covers the same waterfront for much less.
