Best time for a Bosphorus cruise: season, month and hour

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise is September and October: warm days, a warm sea and sunset at an hour that fits before dinner. Late April to May is the runner-up for the Judas trees. Summer gives the longest evenings but late sunsets and hot decks; winter brings lodos cancellations and dinner cruises in full darkness.

The best time for a Bosphorus cruise depends on two clocks: the season, which sets the weather, the crowds and the sea temperature, and the hour, which sets the light. Istanbul stays on UTC+3 all year with no clock change, so sunset swings from 17:37 in early December to 20:42 at the end of June. A "sunset cruise" at 17:00 is perfect in October and three hours too early in July.

Here is how the year looks from the water, season by season, and then how to pick the hour.

Our ranking: September and October first, May second, June third for long evenings, then April for the blossom. July and August work if you sail late in the day; December to February is for travelers who do not mind the cold and want the lit bridges after dark.

Autumn (September to November): the sweet spot

Autumn is the best season on the strait. According to the Turkish State Meteorological Service (mgm.gov.tr), mean highs fall from about 26 °C in September to 21 °C in October and 16 °C in November, and the sea stays at about 19–23 °C through October, so the air over the water is still mild in the evening. Rain is light in September (about 5–6 rainy days) and picks up in October and November.

The big advantage is the sunset. It moves from 19:38 on 1 September to 18:25 in mid-October and 18:01 on 1 November, so a sunset yacht boarding around 17:00 is back in time for dinner on land, or you can go on to a dinner cruise without a long gap. In mid-October the sun drops behind Süleymaniye, which puts the Old City skyline in silhouette from the lower strait.

What to watch:

  • Lodos season starts in October. This strong south-westerly wind blows from October to April and can cancel ferry lines, so plan your cruise early in your stay.
  • Cruise ships. About three-quarters of the cruise-ship calls at Galataport fall between May and October, so the Karaköy–Kabataş waterfront and the day boats are busier on big-ship days.
  • Republic Day, 29 October, is a public holiday from 13:00 the day before; Dolmabahçe Palace stays open.

By November, dinner cruises run fully in the dark and sunset yachts leave around 16:00–16:30. It is still a good month for the light, but bring a proper jacket.

Spring (March to May): Judas trees and fresh air

Spring is the second-best season, and late April to May is the most colorful time on the Bosphorus. The Judas trees (erguvan) turn both shores purple roughly from mid-April to mid-May; the timing shifts by a few weeks from year to year. The best stretches are on the European shore between Kuruçeşme and Rumeli Hisarı, and on the Asian shore at Kandilli, Kuzguncuk and Beykoz.

Şehir Hatları runs a seasonal Judas-tree tour and a tulip-festival boat to Emirgan Park in spring; check sehirhatlari.istanbul for dates. Any loop to the second bridge passes the main erguvan stretches.

Temperatures climb from about 12 °C highs in March to 17 °C in April and 22 °C in May, while rainy days drop from about 13 to 7–8. The sea is still cold (9–16 °C), so open decks feel cool once the sun goes down. Sunset moves from 18:55 on 1 March to 20:01 on 1 May, which means sunset cruises board around 17:45 in mid-March and around 19:00 in May.

May is the best single spring month: the most settled weather of the season and long, warm evenings. From about 1 May, sunset falls after 20:00, so dinner cruises boarding around 20:00 leave in daylight or sunset light for the first time since the previous summer.

Summer (June to August): long evenings, hot decks, swim stops

Summer gives the longest evenings and the warmest sea, at the price of heat and crowds. Mean highs are 27–30 °C, with records above 40 °C, and there are only about 3–5 rainy days a month. The sea reaches about 21–25 °C, warm enough for the swim stop at Poyrazköy on the Black Sea lunch cruises (see Black Sea cruises). Black Sea beaches have dangerous rip currents and district governors ban swimming on days of strong north-easterly wind (poyraz); swim only where a stop or beach is allowed and lifeguarded.

The sunset is late: 20:31 on 1 June, 20:42 on 27 June, 20:05 in mid-August. Sunset cruises board around 19:00–19:15 and end after 21:00. Fixed "4 PM or 5 PM sunset" departures are back on land long before the sun goes down, so check the departure time against the sunset before you book. From May to early August, dinner cruises leave in daylight or sunset light, so the sunset is part of the evening.

What to know:

  • Midday on an open deck is hot. If you take a daytime cruise, pick the morning or a boat with shade.
  • Book ahead. Platform listings note that cruises fill up after 15:00 in summer, and the upper deck fills first. A 10:00–13:00 departure is calmer.
  • The Moonlight tour runs. Şehir Hatları's Mehtap tour sails on Saturdays in the summer timetable only (late June to early September), from Eminönü at 18:25 to Anadolu Kavağı and back at 00:10. Details in our public ferry guide.
  • Turkish school holidays run from late June to mid-September, so ferries and the Princes' Islands are busy with local families.

Winter (December to February): lodos, fog and lit bridges

Winter is the most unpredictable season on the water. Highs are about 10–12 °C, December has the most rain (about 99 mm) and January the most rainy days (about 16), the sea drops to about 9 °C by February, and snow is possible. Lodos peaks in December. On 3 January 2026, for example, Şehir Hatları suspended 17 ferry lines in one day because of lodos. Cancelled sailings are listed on its cancellations page.

Fog is the other winter hazard. When visibility drops to half a nautical mile, the strait closes to transiting ships in both directions and ferries are cancelled line by line. Fog is usually a morning event, so evening cruises are rarely affected.

In return, winter has things the summer does not:

  • Sunset at tea time. Sunset is between 17:37 and 18:22 from December to early February, so a sunset cruise boards around 15:45–16:15. In December the sun drops behind the Topkapı and Hagia Sophia skyline seen from the waters off Üsküdar and the Maiden's Tower: the classic minarets-in-silhouette view.
  • Lit bridges after dark. A 2-hour night cruise at 19:00 is fully dark from October to March and shows the illuminated bridges without a dinner ticket.
  • Dinner cruises entirely after dark, from boarding to return.

The downsides: Şehir Hatları's Long and Short Tours run once a day, the Moonlight tour stops, open decks are cold and windy, and a morning cruise at 09:00 sails in low early light because sunrise comes after 08:00 from late November to early February. For New Year's Eve, cruises are sold only on GetYourGuide, from about $166 to $550; see our New Year's Eve guide.

Best time of day: morning, sunset or night

Morning light falls on the European shore, so the palaces on that side (Dolmabahçe, Çırağan) are front-lit; the water is calmer and the boats emptier. Afternoon light turns to the Asian shore and lights Beylerbeyi Palace and the Küçüksu Pavilion. Sunset is the most popular slot for good reason, and night is about the bridges and the lit waterfront.

For a sunset cruise, board about 75–90 minutes before sunset, so the boat sails through the last hour of warm light and the blue hour after it. Blue hour in Istanbul lasts only about 26–32 minutes; the bridge lights come on in that window. Approximate ideal boarding times: about 16:15 in December, 17:00 in mid-October, 17:45 in mid-September and mid-March, 19:00 in May and August, 19:15 in June and July.

Istanbul time (UTC+3 all year). Sunset cruises usually leave 60–90 minutes before sunset so the sun goes down mid-cruise; dinner cruises leave after dark.

Which side to sit on: the sun always sets over the European shore. Most boats go north along the European side and return along the Asian side, so sit on the left going north and on the right coming back. On the way back the sunset is across the whole strait on your right, with the European skyline in silhouette. Full details in our sunset cruise guide.

Holidays, crowds and the days to avoid

  • Religious holidays (bayram). Ramazan Bayramı lasts three and a half days and Kurban Bayramı four and a half; both move about 11 days earlier each year. Municipal ferries are normally free on bayram days, which makes them the most crowded days of the year on the ferries and the Princes' Islands. The palaces close on the first day.
  • Mondays and Tuesdays. If you combine a cruise with a palace visit, Dolmabahçe, Beylerbeyi and Küçüksu close on Mondays and Topkapı on Tuesdays. See Dolmabahçe and Bosphorus combos.
  • Weekends. Public ferries and the Dentur loop are busier; buy the Dentur ticket online.
  • Your time zone. From late October to late March, Istanbul is two hours ahead of Central Europe, one hour in summer. Departure times on your booking are local time.

FAQ

What is the best month for a Bosphorus cruise?

September and October: highs of about 21–26 °C, the sea at 19–23 °C, little rain in September and sunset between 19:38 and 18:01, which suits a sunset cruise before dinner. May is the best spring month.

What time is best for a Bosphorus sunset cruise?

Board about 75–90 minutes before sunset: around 16:15 in December, 17:00 in mid-October, 19:00 in May and August, and 19:15 in June and July. Sit on the left going north and the right coming back.

Is a Bosphorus cruise worth it in winter?

Yes, if you dress warmly and keep a spare day. Sunset comes early, the lit bridges look their best and the boats are less crowded, but lodos wind can cancel sailings, especially in December.

When do the Judas trees bloom on the Bosphorus?

Roughly from mid-April to mid-May, shifting by a few weeks from year to year. The best stretches are Kuruçeşme to Rumeli Hisarı on the European shore and Kandilli, Kuzguncuk and Beykoz on the Asian shore.

Is a Bosphorus cruise better in the morning or the evening?

Mornings are calmer, emptier and light the European palaces; evenings give the sunset and the lit bridges. In summer, avoid midday on an open deck.

Can I swim on a Bosphorus cruise?

Not in the city stretch of the strait. In summer, some Black Sea lunch cruises stop for a swim at Poyrazköy, weather and local bans permitting.
